I did end up getting some single comb breeds so it was expected. The ones with the pea combs are just fine.

Ah, I see. Apologies if I have you confused with another member, but now that you mention the single combed birds, I do remember a gorgeous SFH cockerel that you had posted about. Or at least I think that was you…

I really hope he isn’t losing asignificant part of his comb and wattles. He is a very pretty boy

No problem! Yes, it's my SFH cockerel who will lose quite a bit of his comb and wattles. Poor guy will never look the same again. But hopefully this will be the worst of it and it won't be as bad next winter.

Mostly OK. But Piglet seems to be suffering a bit. I may bring her in at night.

No problem! Yes, it's my SFH cockerel who will lose quite a bit of his comb and wattles. Poor guy will never look the same again. But hopefully this will be the worst of it and it won't be as bad next winter.

Oh he’s STUNNING ! Shame he’s going to be losing some of it. One would have thought that SFHs would be better suited for, well…Swedish weather. But a single comb is a single comb, I guess.
At least you’ve got this gorgeous photo (and many others I imagine) to remember his glorious comb and wattles.

Yeah, it should be better from next year. You really shouldn’t run into any frostbite problems until he slows down again, years later

I know, right?! Wish there was a pea combed variety.. I do plan to breed him with my pea combed birds though, so hopefully his offspring will be more cold hardy.

Yeah, odd that there isn’t. I know nothing about SFH genealogy, but it is strange that out of all the genes, the straight comb prevailed.
Same with the Icelandic.

That mix would certainly be interesting, quite the catch for the cold climate free ranging peeps as well

Well, every chicken of mine that you know is dead, other than Ursula.

Predator attacks, disease, a few sudden/natural deaths, the culling of two males, and more predator attacks have left us with 9 LFs and 4 bantams in total
