Falling Down Heights, my daily life

Pics
Welp, it had to happen. Took a while though, several months, but I fell.

Carrying a large cage to use as a brooder for the new chick and soon to hatch duckling, wasn't paying attention, and stumbled in a hole the dog had dug.

Landed pretty heavy on my right side. Think a sharp rock got me in the rump. And I twisted my neck and now have a headache.

Otherwise, I'm fine. No cuts or broken bones.

Oh, the cage mostly survived too.

Hugs to you Wind! :hugs

Rescue Duckling Egg has internal shadowing/pipped. Hopefully Lone Chick will have a friend soon!

The little chick is showing some interesting colours. The blueish fluff is now more black, and the red beard is now a full facial. Hard to figure out in the chicken calculator. It's one of the reasons I wanted to restart with pure stock from which I know the genetics.

Still have a stiff neck and a headache from my fall. Bruising is developing on my rump. Sleep was difficult. Chores are difficult.

Last night, just past 10:30, as I was about to go to bed, I got an incoming text. Turned out to be someone replying to one of my sales ads online. BUT, this girl was trying to GIVE me her duck! She sounded desperate too, even offered to pay me.

I could tell she was young, and I felt really bad for the duck. She has it inside her apartment, and alone.

Not wanting to be just as irresponsible since I'm over-crowded this year with not being able to free range them (instead of a muddy field my yard is this year a lush jungle of weeds taller than me!), I thanked her and said no.

Been thinking about it and I really don't know if I should have accepted for the sake of the duck and then tried to rehome it, but my feed bills are already through the roof, ducks are crowded, I have no idea what the health of this bird is, and honestly I'm afraid it might be someone trying to scam me and get my address.

I think you made the right decision Wind, you don't know the health of this bird or how it will effect your flock. You can't fix the mistakes others have made as sad as this situation is. You did well.:hugs

Well that was a shock and an annoyance!

Was taking care of the outside birds and got to the cage where my two Lemon Blue OEGB cockerels were only to find just one in there. Then I did a double take. Make that one and a quarter.

:rantraccoon got the other! This was the really dark blue that had beautiful conformation. I had just put him up for sale, too!

Thank goodness for small favours, the other cockerel was fine. This is the one I'm actually going to keep for breeding as he has a good personality and while not as perfect as the tiny one, still has nice lines.

Guess I know what I'm doing once this rain stops. Putting smaller mesh hardware cloth on those cages!!!

I may have a problem. I don't think that duck egg is going to hatch. Haven't seen any movement in a bit, the colour when candling is 'off' and no chewing noises.

Which leaves me with little Rudy, the single chick. Temporary name, but with his whole face red and the end of the beak also red, it kinda fit.

Also think Rudy is a male. Just by the attitude. Heck, he tried to 'spur' me this morning!

No one is selling chicks right now, not that I have any way of getting it if they were. And no broody hens.

HERE'S THE LITTLE BUGGER WHO IS DESTROYING MY EAR DRUMS!
