Falling Down Heights, my daily life

Had to put one of my older hens down today... I noticed yesterday that she was really 'off' and when I checked her this morning she was clearly worse. What with all the surprise additions lately, and the horrible cold, I didn't have anywhere to put her to try to treat her.

She didn't struggle in the least when I picked her up (but she did give me a 'parting gift'; needed to change my pants), which also told me she was in bad shape. She had weird yellow stains all over her chest.

After it was done, a watery green liquid started coming out of her mouth. O_O

I have no idea how old she was. I'd had her for two years, and she was at least two years old when she came here. I never named her, but I'll miss her. She was a lovely salmon colour.

Yeah, when I have birds thar do all that, there isn't much you really can do, even with all the space you need to seperate. Usually by then, they're already shutting down.

Again, TOO COLD! And to make things worse, one of my electric heaters died yesterday.

Currently -9c outside, and 10c inside. I covered up the incubators.

Speaking of, eggs go into lockdown tonight in the first bator! Looks like I have three quitters but they don't smell so I'm leaving them in just in case. others look good, although to me they seem a bit underdeveloped? Maybe it's just that I have a much more powerful flashlight this time around and an see more inside, but they don't seem very full. Babies are moving though.

Of the dozen I set of my own eggs (batch 2), only one was clear. I'll be checking batch 3 (7 chickens, 10 ducks) later. Those were set on the 20th.

Well, they are both new incubators that I got with my tax return money. Bills to be paid? NOPE! Getting HATCHING STUFF!

The one the first batch is in is a MeeF, holds 30 eggs. Keeps temp really well, but struggles to turn the eggs if they are large or not 'normal' shape. I was going to put shelf-liner under the, but figured I'd just hand turn them for this batch. May use this one as my hatcher in the future.

Second one is a Maticoopx. More expensive even on sale, but it had good reviews and I wanted to try it.

I may get more incubators and start hatching eggs for others with what I make from selling the first batch. OR, just sell chicks, lol!

I think I've heard good stuff about the Maticoopx too, let's see if your experience proves to be positive. I'm pretty good with my one incubator right now, she can hold 51 chicken eggs, and 102 serama eggs/quail eggs

Next year will be the big thing, should all the chicks I ordered make it through. Selling purebreds can be lucrative! A pair of purebred standard Cochin went for over $100 at auction last week!

Hopefully I haven't jinxed it.

I want to specialize in specific breeds that are hardy and do well here, especially if they're a Canadian breed, like the Chantecler.
