They are definitely a rarity! She’s a lovely girl and her baby is super sweetOh, I see. So she's from a breeder that was specifically working on frizzled Marans? That means that you can't get a frizzled Marans anywhere else. Your bird is special!
Did you get them from Tractor Supply? Could it be a Bantam? I found a frizzled chick in the TSC bantam bin. I was so excited I had to buy 3 bantams I didn’t want in order to get it. I looked up what kind of bantam chicks Hoover’s hatchery carries, and the only frizzled kind was Cochins. So I bought 4 black australorps and one had funny wing feathers and feet feathers. Is she possibly a maran frizzle? I love her sweet crazy look, but just curious if she is the same breed or something other than she was labeled.View attachment 3117757

You might be right. At least he’s not overly bald. Maybe he will live a good life. I read that folks who believe in breeding frizzle to frizzle like to have the frazzles (healthy ones) so they can get 100% frizzle in the next generation. The feathers seem spotty and easily broken. I fear she (or he) may be a frazzle.
Interesting…so much to learn!! The comb seems bigger to me, so I’m thinking frazzle roo.You might be right. At least he’s not overly bald. Maybe he will live a good life. I thought so too. And from the bare shoulders, although I have no experience with that feature on frizzled chicks. My red frizzled Cochin bantam is looking to be a boy, so I will be watching to see how that one feathers in.Interesting…so much to learn!! The comb seems bigger to me, so I’m thinking frazzle roo.
Searching this site can locate a wealth of information. In a nutshell, they're prone to internal organ malformations (enlarged organs) and short lives due to poor health. Also lots of problems with feather breakage and very poor regulation of body temperature can lead to illness. Other chickens may pick on it since it looks different. Until you know the genetics you'd be passing on, I'd be cautious breeding that chicken. I've heard that responsible breeders avoid creating frazzles, because they often need to be culled. To me, it just doesn't seem fair to breed a chicken that doesn't have a shot at a healthy life. But your little guy is so cute, and I really hope he beats the odds! So…anything I can learn about frazzles? I’m having trouble finding any info.
