Fermented Feeds

I'm experimenting with fermented feed as a treat for my 9 week olds. Their main source of food is available all the time, but that doesn't seem practical for fermented feed. How often do you feed during the day. Do you put out more than they can eat in say one hour?

i feed once a day enough to last them for a bit but they also have range of bugs dirt and grass most that i have read feed ff once and keep dry out all day
Thanks moomoodiddy (great name). I know someone who's moved to FF exclusively which may be extreme. What you do makes sense to me. The have feed all the time and FF is a big and balanced "treat".

:) thanks lol its not really a treat but it does taste really good to most chickens and it is more nutritonal than regular food some feed ff exclusively

I was feeding ff exclusively. My chicks grew very well on it and loved it. Where I learned about it said to feed twice a day enough for 30 minute to hour feeding.
Any feeding regiment needs to consider all factors however. How much pasture or other food supplies available , supplements, etc.
I quit feeding FF for now because we moved the chickens away from where we live and we are not there to take care of the FF correctly.
I will be back to FF once we have moved completely. Probably sooner as the girls just "seemed" healthier on it. Lol been bugging me

We have Swedish Flower Hen chicks scheduled to hatch in the next 24 hours. I have read that FF is very good for them since they can have problems with the absorption of vitamin B. By feeding FF you take out the anti-nutrients and improve the intake of vitamins and minerals for the chicks and adults, thus less waste. We will start with chicks and move onto our layers and roos we already have.

Fermented Feed seems to me just like sourdough starter.

I sure wanted to feed ff for all the reasons discussed above...but after a few days they would not eat it...going to try again when they get a little older....they are 7 weeks now. We did discover that they ABSOLUTELY LOVE alfalfa. Where we built the chick house there is some alfalfa growing, used to be pasture many years ago. We started pulling it up and sticking it thru the wire and they ATTACK it...more so than any treat we have given them such as meal worms, boss, lettuce, etc...they seem to go ABSOLUTELY crazy over alfalfa...! It almost starts a riot...ha!

I have tried the FF three different times and my girls just won't eat it. They have been used to free ranging and foraging all their lives and have never eaten much chicken feed - they are almost 2 years old. I do put out a fair amount of mixed grains for them and they get fresh greens of some sort daily. As I said, I have made three batches and tried to feed it to them numerous times and wound up throwing it out. It seems to be fairly simple and I don't think I did anything wrong? Any help/suggestions?
