My Orpington hen Thelma laid her first egg today...I just put out oyster shell about Three days ago because she and 3 others are about weeks different in age. I was told to begin Layer feed when they started laying (2 are 20 weeks and she and another are 24 weeks) my question is they are eating Purina starter/layer medicated....so can I eat the egg? Also, can I mix layer feed into the starter/grower and feed it to all of them...need advice please

Congratulations on your first egg! I'm very new at this, so others will have to answer your questions, but I just wanted to say YAY! to a first egg! :wee

I blew out the shell on my first egg. It's in a small nest in a sugar bowl my grandmother gave me. I smile when I see it.

Sally pb thanks! Does seem so silly but watching them grow from day old chicks to little mother is so great an experience. All 4 of mine have been lifesaving in all the happenings in our world. Btw..what a novel idea with the egg. I reasearched thru purina and found out the medicated feed in the feed will not affect the eggs. Thanks again

I am one of those that offers an all flock feed. Layer can harm roosters internal organs and put them in a poor state of health. I stopped offering oyster shell, well to be honest the 50# bag is slowly rotting away. However, they do have access to it. I free range them 100% of the time on an acre plot so they have plenty of supplemental feed available.
