Hello all. So my husband and I have decided to start to raise and process our own chicken. Built a new coop separate from our layers. On Wednesday 15 Cornish cross were delivered from Hoover hatchery (unvaccinated, 2 days in transit, mild weather) and all seemed lively. Took to water readily when dipped and seemed to be eating well. Today is day 5 for them and I've lost 2 already to unknown causes. One was just dead in the morning with a full crop and healthy weight. The other I noticed was having trouble standing so I brought it in the house and started electrolytes and syringe feelings. It's seemed to be inproving but then was dead this morning. So now I'm a tad worried this is more than just "normal loss" so I checked all the chicks again (for the 15th time today) and all 13 seem to have good energy but I noticed 2 of them had empty crops?! Is that normal? Am I missing something? Should I have started electorates and medicated feed from the get go? Any advice or suggestions is appreciated. Thank you!!!

do you have them on heat ? What kind of food are you feeding and is there more then one food and watering dish ?

I have them I'm a round kiddie pool with paper towels on top of the wood shavings. 2 feeders with non medicated organic starter crumbles from Modesto milling company. One round water (no additives)in the middle being changed frequently. Heat lamp at night only as its 90 on average during our days right now and I even had to turn the fan on today, the coop thermometer read 96 but some were panting so I just base it on their behavior

sounds like shipping stress to me. 96 is too hot. 90 and places they can get away from that much heat. Is poop normal ? Make sure you dont see blood in it from cocci. There is a product called nutra-drench. it is absorbed vitamin. You can give them a drop on the side of their beak and they should suck it in. Makes a big difference in their survival rates as long as its not cocci. if you see blood or you can just do it, wont hurt anything mix some corrid in their water .

Corrid is ok with meaties? I was slightly worried about cocci
yes, corrid is ok as far as I know. I see your doing organic so it may not agree with you but I have certainly ate chickens treated with corrid. As far as the drench I would do one drop twice a day for a few days then down to once a day .

Ok thank you. I appreciate your time and advice. No feed stores are open near me tomorrow unfortunately.

So there are still 2 with only liquid in their crops and they seem smaller than the rest. I scrambled some eggs and mixed with the crumbles but no interest. In forced a couple bites in one. Is force feeding a thing with them? I don't want to loose 2 more if I can prevent it.
