I am also dealing with an injured chicken and it’s so hard emotionally, at least it is on me! I am the one who was/am dealing with treating my hen, not my husband and he just doesn’t understand but know we all are here for you! No one told me that owning chickens would involve this kind of thing, but I guess it’s all a part of chickenhood and no matter what we are learning how to treat injuries that unfortunately we may (hopefully not) have to face again, but we will be better equipped to deal with it. I just told my friend who was asking about my chickens that it’s funny how big of a deal something seems until you’ve done it and then it suddenly becomes less of a big deal. I’ll keep checking for updates :hugs
You couldnt be more right. I feel like I'm all alone when it comes to any of my animals because none of my friends or family do anything like I do and dont want to hear about it. It sucks because I'm just looking for another opinion other than my own but everyone around me goes for the easiest option..putting it down. I told my sister about my rooster the other day and she says..ewww why wouldnt you just put it down? That's disgusting..maybe because I've had my rooster longer than shes owned her dog and hes earned his place here. I don't give up easily and I'm not gonna start with my rooster. My husband also doesnt do a darn thing with any of the animals! It is extremely stressful. especially with 2 little kids. But he doesnt understand it at all. He didnt see me working on the rooster for 3 hours the other morning..while losing my mind because my 1 year old will not stop touching everything on my little work station I set up. Kids, this little homestead and homeschool has been a wild ride but I wouldnt trade it for anything. I wish you the best in treating your injured hen..and if you ever need someone to talk to please dont hesitate!

@FlockFromPa this may be a stupid question and if it is please forgive me, but ... how or where are you keeping him so flies can't get to him and lay more eggs in him? Is he in a screened-in area or what?
He is in my insulated shed in a dog crate..I've been keeping a very close eye on him and I've seen no flies in there at all. I believe the screw worm spray is to keep the flies away as well. It says you can treat your chicken coop for flies by misting it in the coop. I was thinking of putting my mosquitoe netting over his crate for good measures

That sounds like a really good plan! Poor little guy, my heart goes out to both of you!

Thank you! I sure hope I can get this under control soon! I'm honestly not even worried about the wound anymore. It's getting these maggots off his body..the wound looks pretty darn good at the moment. If I can just kill the last of these maggots I think we can do this..I appreciate the support!

I totally understand the other people saying to put down an injured chicken. I don’t have anyone I am close friends with that owns chickens aside from my mom but when I talk to her she has never dealt with any of these things and takes the approach that it’s a chicken and it will either make it or it won’t. I don’t really share that same sentiment towards animals as her so she is of little help. I showed her pictures of my hen that was attacked by my dog (dog somehow unlocked gates and grabbed her, it was horrible) and she was like wow you brought that chicken back from the dead. I just figured if my chicken wanted to live and her legs, wings, head/neck were all okay then I just had to do my best, it’s been 3 weeks and still helping her get better but she is coming along well which I didn’t think would be the case but man chickens sure are hardy creatures.

I couldn’t help but laugh about your one year old touching everything lol. I have an almost one year old and it is so hard to try and take care of everyone some days let alone adding a chicken who needs attention into the mix, all of which rely on me! Lots of stress, but like you said wouldn’t trade it for anything. Thank you for the best wishes and same go out to you!

Oh man I couldnt imagine a dog attack! Although weve had plenty of hawk attacks here..I bet that must of been pretty crazy for you. I've also come to realize chickens are crazy hardy creatures and it takes alot to kill one! That's so awesome you've saved your chicken. I bet shes gonna be your pal now if she wasnt before! And yes adding kids to the mix makes it even harder! My one year old tests me so many times a day! She loves to be outside helping with the animals tho but it is so tough caring for sick or injured ones with her lol and to add to the mix I have chickens hatching every week! My head is spinning lately! I appreciate your kind words and hope your hen is back in the coop soon!

I've just read this entire thread and I just have to say I'm really rooting for you and Mr. Rooster. Kudos to you for going the extra mile for him too! I'm currently nursing a sickly hen who has bumblefoot in both feet and is recovering from a severe infestation of mites (talk about heeby jeebies!) so I really can empathize with you. Keep up the good fight! You can do this!

Another thread just popped up titled OPEN WOUND WITH MAGGOTS, the OP on that one said she smeared antibiotic ointment on the wound (after washing the bird) to suffocate the maggots and they came crawling out. Have we gotten @Eggcessive to check in on this thread yet? If you are going to use triple antibiotic ointment, be sure not to get the one with pain reliever in it, just get the plain one. The pain reliever is not good for chickens.

Thank you so much! Wow bumblefoot in both feet sounds horrible! I've thankfully never dealt with that! Mites definitely also give me the heeby jeebies lol I wish you and your hen the best as well! I'm buckling down and giving it my all! I really appreciate the support!
