* Would love some if I could find just a FEW pounds reasonably priced. My pet store has a 2 lb. bag--- but it's just gone through the roof for $23.95!!!! Where do they get this stuff-- gold mines????

The link you posted is to a site which offers to sell "food grade" DE- it talks of "believed to's & reported to's" it tells us that DE will allow seeds to sprout after years in storage-they will do that w/o DE also.
Your finding of websites does not constitute "research"-research involves primary investigation using accepted scientific practices. The downside of the internet is that it's totally unedited and people can & do post "information" that's questionable at best.
Now before everybody decides to blow my doors in let me say this-if you want to use DE yourself, feed it to your birds or rub it on your grandmother that's fine with me. However, if you want more objective data before you decide to do any of those things look for some real scientific proof of the claimed benefits. There's not much out there in the way of real science.

I just took delivery of 50 lbs of "fossil shell flour" which is the same thing. The website is: diatomiteusa.com/shop.

The shipping was a little more reasonable than some. I bought that quantity to white wash the interior of my new coop w/ it. Saw a recipe for whitewash w/ the food grade DE somewhere on BYC.

Hope this helps.

Sorry if my post offended anyone in anyway. I was just excited to find something that is safe to use around my precious children and animals that will take care of the household pests, i.e. ants, without poisoning or killing off everyone in my household. Then in doing more research (excuse me, reading) on it, I found lots of information on the health benefits of it as well. I read more about it than what's posted on the website that I included in my post. I included that certain link because it actually had a guideline as to how much to administer to each person/pet and I am a fan of the healthier alternative. I am not claiming to be an organic person, because I am not. Would like to be, but am not! SO, in trying to be helpful to others, I shared what I learned and was excited about!

I am in no way a salesperson for this product and am not trying to sell it to anyone. Furthermore, I am not recommending DE's use in outside gardens due to the honey bee crisis. I agree, that guinea's are the more natural way to eliminate insects from your garden too. I don't, however, see a problem with it being used indoors. I consider everyone on here a friend and would never lead anyone astray intentionally. I am however, going to use it for my family and animals. It has to be healthier than the chemical alternatives that are out there. Again, sincerely sorry if there has been any offense taken to my post!

Concerning honey bees and food grade DE...our neighbor lost his hives to mites but that was two years before I ever heard of, or began using DE.

I don't feel that I'm causing them harm with how I use it around the yard. I use it in all of the coops/runs/hutches but I hardly ever see the honey bees in those areas. Why would they spend time in those areas where there are no flowers? We have several flower beds around the yard plus a yard full of dandelions, wild violets, chickweeds blooming and that's where I'm seeing them.

As far as I'm concerned, the local farmers here, who herbicide their entire fence lines are doing more damage to the honey bee population than me and my food grade DE!

Note that hemlock and cocaine are also 100% natural products. I wouldn't recommend feeding either to chickens. I do wish to get some DE and use it in limited quantities.

Not to get up on a sop box, but cocaine is not a 100% natural product. The coco leaf it is based on is natural. After they process it it is in no way shape or form a "natural " product. Humm, no that the price of gas is going sky high I wonder how that is going to affect the price of cocaine. Oh, and yes, they use gasoline in the refining process when they produce cocaine.
