Found pigeon AU SBL 361 2018

I’m a little nervous about him being unhappy about the wing. I might ask him what his plans are for her/if he’s gonna be able to nurse her back to health. If the answer is less than satisfactory I’d keep her for now and give her to someone more willing to care for her injury.
This is good advice.
He sounded Hispanic so there might be a language barrier as to how it came out. I dont know much except that I know nothing about how to help the poor thing and he might have a clue

I think I would ask him "If she can't fly again will you have to cull her?" I had a bird with an injured wing. It took almost 6 months for her to fly again. I did fear she wouldn't.

Some people raise pigeons for meat, but most keep them because they like the looks of the birds, they like the personality, they want to race them (homing pigeons can be released a long distance away and will fly back, and people race which ones come back first), or some combination thereof. The band means that's an intentionally released racing pigeon, most likely.

If they are with the AU do they exclusively race or do some people still eat them? Geez...I'm sorry but I used to live in the city and I can't imagine eating one. We used to call them "rats with wings". No offense intended. I just can't wrap my brain around that...it's a pigeon...it'd be like eating a robin or a parakeet to me...

Racing pigeons are not for eating.

Looking at the 2nd pix posted, It does not look like a RACING, pigeon. It very well may be a Homing pigeon, and peeps place bands on their legs for ID, and for breeding purposes, to keep track. Also, advantage with a band,,,,,,,,, is this. This one would be considered a FANCY, BREED. When someone wants to buy a particular bird, they may want a certain age group. (preferably a young bird VS a SENIOR) THE BAND SHOWS WHEN BIRD WAS HATCHED. Owner also knows at a certain point which are male and female. Band is easy way to assure of gender. Most fanciers keep good records and track.
Most likely the person that you are in touch with ether sold that bird to the person, or shared some leg bands with. With that person no longer around, maybe the pigeons were set free. :idunno
Not sure exactly where you are in Indiana, but there may be rescue, rehab centers that could possibly take in your pigeon. :idunno
Thanks for being kind and taking in this injured :hugs

Good job on taking this pigeon in. If the person you spoke too didn't sound to bothered about the bird or wasn't happy it had a broken wing please try and find a rehabber. I'm almost certain this bird will be culled. A pigeon, racing, homing or other that can't fly won't be any use to anyone. A rehabber could give it the time it needs to hopefully make a decent enough recovery to be rehomed. Or alternatively you could keep it! There is some excellent advice to be had here and if this pigeon is already OK about you holding it, it may make a great pet!

We don't have the means to care for it. I plan to call the guy again and see what his intentions are. We are in the upper northwest of indiana; about 45 minutes from Chicago. If anyone knows of a rehab place for her near there thatd be a great alternative.

I wish I was near, I'd have it in a heartbeat! I'm trying to breed some ash into my birds and s/he really is a good looker! I don't know if @cavemanrich may know of somewhere that way out. I think he's near illinios. Is that near Chicago?
