Does anyone have any tips on what to feed the hens to make the eggs more flavorful or health? I think they are good now, but looking to make them better (the yolks are sometimes yellow and sometimes a are dark, almost orange color). I sell my eggs locally and people like the darker yolks and the flavor. I free range them about 50% of the time (I can't do more free ranging time because they tend to wander into the neighbors flower gardens). I typically feed them egg layer pellets, and a little oats and corn in the yard, along with a daily feeding of cheese.

I find that my yolks are usually nice and dark when fed lots of food scraps, greens, etc.

Also, this time of year a sure-fire way to get darker yolks is feeding pumpkin/squash leftovers. I'm lucky to have a pretty ready supply, but they can be found inexpensively this time of year and even if you're eating the bulk of the fruit, the peals, seeds, etc. is still a good amount of "chicken snack".

Offer treats high in the Lutein and Zeaxanthin Carotenoids.
Kale, spinach, turnip greens, collards, dandelion greens, and mustard greens. Beet greens and carrots are also good too.
