Gold Laced Orpington- For Learning and Sharing

Pics
Renie, you said this was going to be an exciting year..it sure is...Danny was my favorite Dee rooster..Cant wait to see his babies..you have some amazing black orps to work with..going to be fun to see how they develope. keep us in some update pics.

Dee that sure does look like a pullet..

Which one looks like a pullet, Kay? I agree if you mean Kay.

No..I will start pressuring the DH at the end of April. I have to be really really good till than...Maybe do some extra cooking and cleaning..maybe a surprise massage appointment for him...I have about 50 chicks right now. I will have 50 more by Easter. That should keep me out of trouble till than.

I have to build an enclosed run yet. I will also be keeping my show Silkies in the same building. I should say potential show silkies. I have just Silkie baby's and eggs in the incubator. I have never had bantams before. My DH wants them and he said he is going to show them.

They look like cute toys to me. I asked him if he is going to eat the culls..I probably should not have asked him that.

My husband keeps wanting to count the chicks, I keep distracting him and giving a sheepish smile and saying, "I've hatched out three! (as I bat my eye lashes)" He rolls his eyes and laughs and says, "you need to take a more accurate count." If I could just hatch out a few pullets, please, oh, please!

Regardless, I'm finished. The adult girls are looking scrappy and I will separate everyone tomorrow. The boys won't be happy, but I get the feeling the girls will be relieved. When I can figure out how many pullets I have, I will share the astounding results. Geez, I love the boys, but, soooo many?

Question number 4 Would I also be correct that the silver carrier bird is the better option to use for outcross to white to avoid the red leakage in the male hackles? Question number 5?Not sure if this is a question Ive been told that the cuckoo base is the way to avoid that, in the event that you have red leakage, but im not sure how the cuckoo gene works.

From what I understand, the ones carrying "gold" are in fact carrying red. And if they don't carry red, then they are considered to be carrying silver. So for your solid blacks, the red is desirable, but not for any of the blues or splashes. I am assuming your blacks are the result of breeding blues, where you have a percentage that will be black. I'd cull all the ones with red leakage, for that signals what we think of as the "gold" - which is an enhancement for black but they in fact carry red. Can it be any more confusing? I hope not.

So this "gold" or red is desirable in gold laced but something you don't want in blues and splash.

Whew! Thank you. I need to re-read all of this and make notes. TMI

After seeing Dee's and your GLOs I'm starting to wonder if you can't color sex them at birth..........

Well, do tell. How would you?

I'm waiting to see where their breeding stock comes from because I definitely can tell which pullet is the mom of which chick in my brooder. Not gender, though. You have my attention.

I'm thinking that if you keep track of the black ones and the cinnamon ones, a pattern may emerge.Markings on heads may be important too.A lot of sex linked male chicks have nice yellow dots on their heads. This might work with GLOs due to the blues and the blacks being crossed. The old red/silver thing again. More notes Dee !

What I have noticed, which I had forgotten that it occurred with the parents, is that the Greenfire x Greenfire chicks the females had a horn colored stripe on the bridge of their beak when they were very young. It went away of course and evened out. Didn't remember it until I saw it again with these little ones. If the one's with the stripe across their beak turn out to be girls, now that would be nice. The Greenfire x Heirloom Orp chicks don't have this trait - and I know one is a pullet.
