from what I am understanding high calcium is more a symptom of gout and organ meat/red meat a cause. . You sure wouldnt want them to have calcium if they have gout. I too am supposed to limit calcium because of kidney stones. Mine is caused from steriods=causing bones to crumble=kidneys cant filter/handle all the extra calcium=stones. conclusion for myself is to stay away from both.

hi all, Home from shopping. ended up buying 2 bags of peat and only one of shavings. I cant move the peat by myself . it is very heavy and I am tired . I think it will expand a lot one it is free of its confines. I would love a nap right now but if I do I will miss the opportunity to spread it today .

Granny, I have always fed my cornish x chicks layer pellets, on the assumption that the extra calcium will help their legs. I also feel like the 16% protein doesn't rush their growth as much.

I figure the extra calcium will not give them gout, or kill their other organs in 6 - 8 weeks. I have never lost a meatie to leg problems.

Gout is not a calcium problem! It is an joint accumulation of uric acid- that metabolized from nucleotides that are the monomers of DNA and RNA, that are very common in red meat, and protein reach food.

But, layer feed will NOT have time to cause harm to a 6 - 8 week old chick.

I think that diets high in calcium can cause gout in poultry.

No, it wont. I bought special feed for all stages of what I have right now and it got very confusing. I did have them on chick starter/grower 20% and they were ALL getting to big too fast. Just today I have gone back to flock raiser. 18% good for ducks and chicks and I know my layers thrive on it. I dont know how much calcium is it that.

Thank you enola for the help and info.

Thinking about serving the meat chickens a blend of lemon butter , garlic, salt and pepper. marinate them from the inside out. Might slip it a beer or 2 along the way.
