Back in December they closed the schools here due to rain! It wasn't even that bad, but I guess the school officials didn't want the blame for stupid people doing dumb things, like trying to drive through high water.
That, unfortunately, is another result of the times we live in. Schools really are in a no-win situation with any closure - if they close, they get slammed for being overly cautious - if they don't, they get slammed for not be careful enough....especially if something happens. I have seen this play out over and over with each and every "weather event" we've had locally - the growing use of social media has made it 10 times worse as it gives a platform for the complainers on both sides.
Don't even get me started on the people driving through flooded areas - I just *love* the news broadcasts during flooding events where you see the cars in the background driving around the barriers and into the water and, surprise, getting stuck
