I also use two heat sources in case on light burns out. It has happened to me twice and I lost to many chicks. I use one red heat bulb and one ceramic bulb of lower wattage but enough the can get warm if need be. I can hang a 100 watt ceramic a bit lower too.

Yeah I use one in the coop too when it gets below freezing. I think a 100w ceramic is safer as it isn't likely to start a fire if a feather flies against. it.

I don't like having chicks or adults under a light all night, it is supposed to get DARK at night. $4 is a darn good price! I think I paid about $18 for the one I have (though reptile stuff is always more expensive).

They come in different wattages and I think they're safer. I don't use heat in the coops and the birds seem fine. I suppose a little heat wouldn't hurt but isn't necessary.

My roosters lose a bit of comb the first year. Tips mainly. I wish there were a Delaware that was rosecomb and others as well. No Marans have rosecombs, but RIR's do.

And Wyandottes of course. What I see on the hatchery webs sites are so poor looking, for a dual purpose breed.

thanks all. I have calmed down a bit. hahaa they are so tiny yet they are jumping and flying ! an inch off the ground and clearing 10 inch hurdles. I love the color on those statues !!! I should count how many statues are in the torture chamber . they are every where. my mothers collection including some Aztec design. 40 piece plate set that i just found out was pricey. think i might try and sell it. you can find a couple plates or cup and saucer on ebay but not the whole set.

I went to TSC yesterday for feed and hay and of course to see the chicks.

The poor kid in the chick corral was so overwhelmed. I asked what the breeds where and he said they were red pullets, pullets, and assorted bantams. None of those breeds are on my list, so I passed.
