oh wow, thats a good deal. the person that is selling for .75 is getting them from a hatchery and he wont say where when i asked him but i am afraid of deals like that. it could be the one in Ohio that had that problem (i have forgotten) for 2-3 yrs. running now that makes the kids sick? he is close to there.

The husband recently told me that he would like to stop charging one of our customers (it's a friend of his) - and explained the situation. I happen to agree, but was smart enough to leverage it into an agreement that that would "require" me to expand the flock, lol. I mean, if I'm going to be just giving away two hens' worth of eggs every week I need to add more hens, right?? Add that to the fact that last summer we actually had to turn away a couple of folks wanting to be regular customers and it's obvious that we just don't have enough chickens

I never thought it would pay to sell the eggs. I only get about a doz. every 2 days. and my SIL and one friend are waiting for them. lol they take turns now. that is why i bought 12 egg layers for them. I did mention they would have to throw me a bag of food every once in a while. I think the eggs out this way go for 2 dollars a doz.

I also go through 50 $ in fed a month. I think i am doing it wrong. corn is 10$ a bag and the layer i am buying is 16.

It doesn't really "pay", but it does help offset the cost of feed....which is all I was looking to get out of it as it's nice to have pets that help support themselves vs. the freeloading four-legged kinds we keep, lol. The eggs that I sell feed pay for about half my feed costs a month, so at least it cuts back on what I'm spending (and frees up money for more birds, lmao!)

hahaa, perfect way of looking at it. how many layers do you have ? do you have to buy those .50 cent egg cartons? and best of all, do you wash them? I bought some once and they were filthy. Mine get like that after a rain .

My Tom, (always trying to be ever so helpful) has been buying those chocolate marshmallow eggs with the excuse that its only .50 cent more and you have your cartons. hahaa well, they only fit the smaller eggs so dont let anyone fool you. I know because i have 6 of them already.

.50 is a lot if they're used.

I do have friends who save them for me and I prefer the styrofoam. Those I can wash. Any cardboard with dirt get tossed.

My brother saved me a lot of cardboard but he smokes some stinking cigars so I tossed them.

Smokers can't smell their own stink. Non smokers can.

Even at the TSC store cartons are .50, but to order then is just as much. I've been offered a deal here, but I didn't ask what that deal was.

I get $2.50 a dozen and that's much too cheap to pay for cartons too.

If I could sell $50 worth of eggs that might be half my feed bill. But then there are shavings to buy and scratch.

I also hatch my own replacements. This way I know they're reasonably safe. A close flock is best.

Just hatched out 10 more chicks. I keep Delaware, Columbian Rocks, Easter Eggers and Birchen Marans.

Right now I have 14 that lay, one that should lay but I don't think ever will (she's my little special needs bird) and two that should start laying any time now. I'm thinking of adding 8 more now and then this fall getting rid of 3-6 of the older birds.
I have some great friends here at work who are weird about things like eggs - they won't eat farm fresh eggs (what????) so they buy store bought eggs and then give me their cartons and also bring me cartons from their family members, friends, etc. Sometimes we get a bit short on cartons because the guys that buy our eggs forget to return the empties - their DH's buddies so he just tells them if I don't get some cartons back they don't get eggs, amazing how many cartons I get back that week, lol. I haven't had to pay for any cartons yet....though there have been times I was storing eggs in bowls and other containers in the fridge due to having no cartons to put them in until they got them back to me to fill up again. I will wash any foam ones that are in need of it, but don't wash them if I don't see obvious need to. The cardboard ones just get tossed if they are nasty.

LOL - so true! I am a non-smoker, DH is a smoker. He has tried to sneak things past me and gets caught every time - example, he had to drive my truck one day and KNOWS that it is a NO SMOKING vehicle. The next day I went out to leave for work, took one whiff and he was busted - to this day he swears he only took 2-3 puffs, all the windows down, etc .........all of which I believe because I've seen him do it that way in his own vehicle.............and that I was just guessing when I called him on it, but it STUNK (to me - he couldn't smell a thing of course).
