If this will help you at all ... I hit a vessel on one of mine last night, but I had a small cup of cold water handy, and sugar. I dipped just the very tip of a tissue in the water, and pressed it against where the blood was coming from, hoping the cold would make the vein contract. (I was very careful with this part - didn't want to chill the chick.) Then, after a moment, I packed it with fine sugar. Took a couple of coats, but it stopped the bleeding. I used to use flour, but a friend of mine who had cared for animals her whole life and is scary smart said sugar works better. You probably didn't hurt your little one; mine would holler every time I touched her with the tool, or a piece of shell fell in on her, or she felt a drop of water. I imagine when you've been cocooned in a dark, quiet place your whole short life, every little touch is startling. LOL
