I don't vaccinate. I also don't free range. My thought is if you have strict biosecurity, you shouldn't have to vaccinate. Plus vaccinating does not guarantee anything. I lost birds to birds to Mareks even though they were vaccinated for it.

Well, I just set them a half hour ago!! Want to come hang out today, then bring some home for me??

I would have but my daughter took the car to school today...

Does everyone vaccinate their birds? Looking at Jeffers, it almost looks like they have a vaccine for all of the super scary stuff out there. I'm wondering if maybe it'd be a good idea to start vaccinating my birds. I don't have massive amounts of birds, but we'll be getting more organized with breeding and we'd be devastated to lose any of our pets. Some of the birds we have now are family! If I'm going to be shipping, selling and breeding, I'm thinking it might be worth the cost to minimize any risk of sick birds. Does anyone hve any insight? Oh, we are big on free-range, so I assume that increases our risk with wild birds and such. :(

I did my research an decided not to vacc. In nor cal you get meriks ( sp) at about the same rate with or without vacc. But we do not have large flocks of birds in our area that could pass stuff on. If you do vacc do it when they are older not 1 days. The number I remember for the immune system being mature enough is 12 weeks. We were just discussing it yesterday on the nor cal thread.

But most of my babies and their homes will never see another chicken once they leave herethey are very isolated. Free ranging hover be vigilant about mites . Many dust baths availibe and watch thoes chicks. Wild birds all have em so they get dropped everywhere.

My severely overloaded incubator...

Anyone ever have to stack eggs like that? I have talked to two people who said it will work just fine, but I am super nervous about the eggs getting caught between the racks and getting crushed.

Yes especially quail. I do not stack near the an if I can help it. The one thing to watch for is the incubator not 100% shutting and letting humidity out. Make sure it is sealed at all times. Quail eggs are forgiving but don't love to ship. So you will have space in a week or so.

For all of you thinking about bresse, might also try quail for sustaining meat flock. Bresse are not fast ( even if they are ammmmaaazing) and if you get used to your own meat it can be hard to go back to store. Quail are 8_10 weeks from egg to table and can fill the gap.
can you free range quail?  LOL
:D

Quail have no home instinct. Plus some lines of cots are so friendly they will not run from predictors instinct bedamned.
What are you sprouting for that color?  I do wheat and oats with a little BOSS.  It is much greener.

OK how do I do that? Must have!

So I've decided to do something different for my birthday this year. Earlier today I claimed 2 sets of chicks from CPL and 2 lucky swappers are going to get chicks in 2.5 weeks; right around my birthday!! I'm still working on who but CPL will be contacting you eventually!

Oh, another thing. Those sprous don't see the light of day until they go out to the pens. That might also be why they are yellow. I noticed when I gave a chunk to the free ranges, and they completely ignored it, the next day, it was a lot greener.

Good golly was today ever an eventful day. Four kids all morning, then took the boys to my brother after watching his kids, went to the house for the inspection, got G's watch battery change, learned that the other jewelery store was robbed just before I went, then ate so much dinner at mom's house that I thought I swallowed a boulder. All while waiting to hear about his job! Talk about having fivethousand things on the mind at once! At least the dealership took him to work and picked him up while the car was inspected so that was one less thing to worry about for me. Whew! Bedtime for the old fart! I hope everyone gets their chickens in great shape!

Ayeupchuck, any news on the bresse? :(

So I didn't want to damper spirits yesterday since everyone seemed to be in such a great mood. Some beautiful birds posted! I had a long tough one yesterday.

So I had to have one of the two cockerels euthanized. He's being sent for necropsy at OSU. They'll be testing for Newcastle and Coryza and some other things.

I had blood drawn and cultures taken from a pullet. They are going to the state lab and are being tested for MS, MG and AI. I'll let y'all know what the results come back as.

Fingers crossed its something minor though after speaking to an avian pathologist for over an hour I've prepared myself for the worst. She also mentioned that if ta something major that I should be prepared for the state to show up and confiscate the rest of the birds which scares me something awful.

I just can't risk putting them out anywhere near the other birds and hoping for te best. I'm really hoping that the Denagard arrives today. It's snowing as in Portland that means people freak out. :/ you'd think it'd be no big deal but an inch of snow and people act like its a blizzard. So weird.

Anyway. I'm just thankful for everything that is good in my life. I have my health and my family and you guys! And if I'm really lucky, the bresse will be fine and if not, I start over. I still have the chicks which luckily are with broody mommas in the coop. Just have to stay positive!

I hope it doesn't come back with them wanting to take birds

And I soooo DIDN'T say this

They "may" want all poultry on site for fear of cross contamination no matter what you swear about bio security

X2 we don't vaccinate either. We don't free range but our birds have huge yards that are split in two and roatated so they always have fresh fodder and clean pasture.

When is/was your birthday? I have one this month too and have been trying to decide what I want to do for it. I have 27 eggs from KYTinpusher due to hatch that day, I did not even realise when they were going to hatch until a couple days after I set them! Most are for a friend but there are a few SFH in there for me!

Oh no, I'm hoping all goes well. I sure hope you heard from GFF on this one especially if it does come back to being something really bad.

The 21st. I have eggs going into lockdown that day so no birthday chicks for me but close at least.
