My rooster is looking like he is very anemic. the best way to describe it is he looks like he got into a fight with a sack of flour. his comb, waddles, and legs are are very pale. he has no cough and does not have any external injuries. ANY ideas?

When was he last wormed? He is pale from anemia. Does he have any lice or mites on him? You will need to make sure he is eating and drinking, try adding Red cell (Horse iron supplement) to help in a pinch. Worms are often the cause of a lot of chicken problems like that. If he has not been wormed or wormed with the proper wormer they may be sucking the life from him. Ivomec is a good wormer to use, but he will need to get some strength up before giving him a full dose. We'll need more info to help: age, when wormed, who else is with him, diet, poo etc....

The roo is probably about 20 months old and has 10 hens with him. we have given all of them DE before, with in the last year. he eats free choice layer pellets along with a lot of whole oats and large amounts of fruits and veggie leftovers. this evning we saw him poop it was white and watery and not a lot. none of the other hens seem sick at all, we just noticed him acting tired. he is a standard white brahama.

Sounds like he needs to be treated for lice and mites and then wormed. Wazine is a little more gentle but you will then have to worm with Ivomec. Treat all of your birds for lice and worms and increase the amount of nutritious foods. Chopped greens, scrambled eggs etc. I would not give fruits for a while. Sometimes they act like a laxative.

Is he eating okay? I agree about treating for mites and lice, and probably won't hurt to worm him.

I would definitely look for evidence of mites in the housing too. If you find them, you must not only treat the birds with ivermectin, you must eradicate them from the housing too using spray insecticides rather than the barrier powders (not powerful enough to be used as treatment, more of a deterrent really).

Question, then:
I had the same problem w/a serama rooster. At first he had no problems walking, but I saw that he was nearly ALBINO and separated him. Sure enough, it was mites AND lice! I doused him, everyone else, the ground and coops w/ poultry dust (permithrin), and was surprised to see that kill those little buggers nearly right away!

We pumped some pediatlyte through him, along w/ yogurt crumbles.

By day 4 of some heavy nursing, he FINALLY started to show pink in his comb, etc., and finally red, and he was perked right up...except for his tail drooped to the side. I've had that happen w/ lack of enough protein in Serama's diet, so chalked it up as the mites taking up all his nutrients.

However, it is approx 2 weeks later and he is not walking right. He does a couple of steps and falls down one way, then the other. LIKE a DRUNKARD! I thought he was tripping because of the weight of his big fanned tail tilting, but it's not.

I suspect anemia due to the blood sucking. I mean, he was on DEATH'S door...I was quite surprised he made it. I have been to every single store in a 30 mile radius looking for poly-vi-sol WITHOUT IRON. NOTHING. Either they (Walmart, publix, Walgreens, CVS, and various baby stores incl Babies R Us) didn't carry it at ALL or they carried it w/ the IRON ONLY.

My question (finally, right?!) since he is anemic, why can't I give him the poly with iron...that is what I have and he needs the extra iron, right?

I have him on a mash of yogurt, starter crumbles (more protein than my layer), and flax seeds, and I have the liquid vit B12 w/ dropper...I have dropped about 1/4cc on the side of his beak this morning. I have vit E gel capsules (400) here, but not sure if that will help. I am more concerned w/ the iron poor blood and how to fix it without a transfusion!

Thank yoU!!!

Good question - I have given triple-strength doses of Battles Poultry Drink supplement to my poor anaemic BO, and the large doses of iron it contains have done her the world of good. I doubt she would have made it if I hadn't been getting all the extra iron into her system.

Personally, I'd go ahead and give it. I may be ignorant of some really good reason why you shouldn't, but it seemed to work for my girl.

Thank you...by any chance can you tell me the amount of iron in the Battle's? I looked it up online, but the stores appear to only tell the ingredients and not amount of each ingredient.

Thanks again,
