help! chick pecked in eye

my 3 month old chicken pecked my 5 week old chick in the eye really aggressively and she’s having trouble opening that eye. what do i do??

Separate the younger one, and place it somewhere warm. Can you get some saline eye wash, and Terramycin or plain Neosporin ointment to use in the eye twice a day. Swelling may make it hard to see if the eye is intact for a couple of days. Chicks often aim for the shiny eyes. Watch out for bullying when having older birds with young ones.

i bought this poultry spray that is supposed to help with pecking injuries and things like that. do you think i should put that around her eye?

I would just do as suggested above, the ointment should take care of any infection, if the eye is not too damaged it may just heal up fine. Small corneal injuries often heal up fine as long as infection isn't allowed to set in. If it's very damaged, then it will just have one eye and given time it will adapt to that, you may have to pay more attention to ensure it's not bullied if that is the case.

This happened with one of my chicks awhile back, it was awful to see happen and the chick immediately started bleeding. I rinsed with saline and put neosporin (withOUT pain reliever) on her eye. She didn't like it would scratch her eyes making it worse. I just kept at it, using just a dab and drying her eye after flushing (to minimize irritation and her scratching) and it healed pretty quickly. I separated her from the group but she was still visible during her healing time. Good luck!

do i put it in her eye or around her eye?

I put it on a qtip and did both. She would close it when I got the qtip close so it didn't really get in her eye well, it took some work to hide it from her and gently roll it into her eye when she'd open it but in general, I just put it on the outside.

Just finished sorting this one out. Nasty peck to her eye I believe. There is a wound above her ear that was pretty nasty as well.
I cleaned with PH neutral water. Chickens have an oil based tear duct system. It does contain some water but it's a very thin oil based lubricant that 'oils' the third wiper eyelid.
I used Chlorhexedine to clean the wound above her ear and Betadine to fight infection.
I used Oftalmowell eye drops in her eye twice daily, morning and night.
She stayed with me for a couple of nights but wanted to be back out with her flock on day three. She's been a bit reserved and nervous because I think she has sustained some permanent damage. It took just over a week for her to start using the damaged eye properly again.
