I have a one year old hen which is making weird coughing like noises and gasping occassionly. She is drinking and eating just fine but i am very concerned since my other hen who was of same age died earlier this year. She also was completely fine except for the coughing like noises. She died suddenly and made a loud shrieking noise as she did.
I am very worried. '.

Could be a number of things. Gapeworm, CRD, etc. I would worm her with Valbazen 1/2 cc for medium size bird 1/4 for bantams and for large breeds 1 cc. Orally. This will get rid of all poultry worms including gape, follow up in 10 days very important. If it’s CRD all you can do is treat symptoms but doesn’t kill it. It’s contagious and if you have a valuable flock best thing to do is cull. If your able consult a vet who specializes in poultry to know what’s really wrong with her. Good luck

I would not treat unless you have a proper confirmed diagnosis of what the respiratory diseases you’re dealing with by a poultry specialist veterinarian. If you’re in the USA, try calling your state’s university veterinarian or another state’s university veterinarian and they will help and direct you. From the symptoms that you’re describing, it honestly sounds like it could be Aspergillosis, Mycoplasma Gallisepticum (MG, CRD), Infectious Bronchitis virus (IBV) or even Infectious Laryngotracheitis Virus (ILTV).

Is your hen still making the noise and gasping? What is your location? Sometimes noisy breathing can be stridor a sound when there is something partially blocking the airway. Many times it is a small piece of food, swollen tissue, or mucus plugs in the airway. If there is also sneezing, coughing, or head shaking, that can be a sign of a respiratory disease. There are a number of those, some viruses, some caused by different bacteria, mycoplasmas, or fungus. Here is a good link about common diseases:

I have had gapeworm here that I'm hoping will be eradicated soon if I can keep the wild birds from spreading it in the meantime. I will tell you that in addition to worming (if you confirm you have it - always confirm via fecal. Wish I had done this years ago), you'll need to move them to new ground. They'll just pick it right back up.
