Hi all,
Okay so I know it’s too early to know for sure buuuut I have a couple of Belgian D’uccle chicks that my broody hen has been raising . I bought them as day old sexed chicks from a very reputable breeder that I’ve purchased multiple chicks from in the past and the sexing had been 100% accurate. We recently purchased the two d’uccles as day olds, and a week old pekin for our hen to raise. I knew within a week that our pekin unfortunately was a cockerel, as he began to grow in his comb. I know of course that sexing day old chicks isn’t always accurate, but am still so sad that we will have to give our pekin back as we cannot have roosters and I’ve grown so attached haha.
I have raised many chicks before but every breed is so different and grows out so differently, and I have never had Belgian d’uccles before so would love some reassurance that these chicks still look like they’re female?
They are about 6 weeks old now. Both are still giving me pullet vibes I think but I’m now second guessing myself. They are both much more skittish then my little pekin cockerel, and seem to pick fights much less then he does with them.
But as they are maturing and their comb is now beginning to grow I’m so worried I’ll wake up and they’ll look like cockerels overnight like my pekin did.
Chick one was missing a lot of feathers as a day old, and was about half the size of her sister up until about a week or so ago when she seemed to catch up even though she’s always been thriving. She had been much slower to feather then her sister, and still has less/shorter feathers.
Chick 2 has always been much bigger, she feathered really quickly and has had huge feet feathers since a week or so old.
Sorry about the terrible photos, they literally do not stay still haha. I’ve added photos of when they were little, and now at 6 weeks. They are supposedly mottled d’uccles but so far are mostly just black.
If you know anything about raising/sexing d’uccles, please let me know what you think
