Hello! We are new to chickens. We purchased this ameraucana at a feed store when it was about 9 weeks old. She was hatched in the middle of June, so she/he is now 4 months old. They assured us that it was a hen. However, a friend just saw her and swears it is a rooster, based on tail feathers and what maybe a spur spot. Now I am nervous because we cannot have roosters in our town. Please let me know if you think Liberty is male or female. She doesn’t crow.

Cockerel. Tail feathers aren't a good way to tell gender until much older, and spurs don't start growing for a while. All chickens have spur bumps at that age. You can tell its a cockerel by the long, pointy saddle feathers.

Stands very manly. 🐓🐓🐓

Hey! Check Tail and hackle feathers-- short and round hackle feathers typically mean female, and longer and pointy show male.
