HELP! Is this duckling dead?

I decided to crack open the dead egg, is there anything in this picture that can shows what happened? There was a little bit of liquid coming out when peeling off the shell. I’m so devastated, it was a beautiful Magpie baby from my duck Maggie, it has the same bill markings as her :(

I believe this is a foot over head mal position. Pretty common one it seems :hugs
@Pyxis ? Do you agree?

The duckling didn't position correctly for hatch, and one of its feet ended up over its head. This left it unable to get the leverage it needed to strike the shell to hatch, so it perished.

Was there anything I could of done? If I would of cracked it open that day could I have saved it? I’ve felt horrible since it happened and kept thinking what I could of done differently that could of saved it :(

Putting a safety hole in the air cell and then doing a full assist may have saved it, but that's hard to do for an egg under a broody, and you couldn't have known that it was malpositioned like that, so don't beat yourself up.

Agree. I've probably lost more trying to assist under a broody than I have saved so far. :hmm
It's a gamble either way. :hugs
