Help! My last barred rock is on one leg! Literally!!!!!

What are the
"IAV-A, ND, CWD*"
In red below the numbers mean?
After looking them up, they are diseases that each lab test for, mostly affecting farm livestock (pigs, cattle, etc.) ND is Newcastles disease affecting chickens. VSV is a virus affecting cattle, horse, and pigs. If you contact the closest labs, they can tell you what tests are done on poultry.

I see. Thanks much. ^-^

I am so sorry to hear you and your beloved hen are going through this. I am glad, though, you posted here for help. It's a very informative thread. I don't think I'd have the constitution to do what you have done. I would have packed her into a cat carrier and driven her to the vet's. Thankfully, I have a reasonably priced avian vet in my zip code.

My vet shared this site with me:

It's a good source of reliable information.

@Stajemahal can you post some photos of the drainage?
Are you getting fluids into her?

==================
Side note about vets - even if you have a lot in your area, they may not help, prices can be out there too, so getting care is not always an option.

I looked at the link, there are quite a few listed in NC, but none near me.

A while back, just for "kicks" I looked up all the vets/clinics near me. There are 15 offices with an average of 3 vets per office. That's 45vets within about a 20mile radius of me. I have now called 12 offices, including my own vet. Not one is willing to perform a test or see a chicken. I have even been laughed at and hung up on. (Average price here for fecal float for dogs is $48 and cat is $43).

IF you have a state lab near you, this may be your best bet for tests. Some state labs perform fecal tests, while others don't. NC has 4 state labs (satellite labs - one is fairly close to me), every one of them will take walk-in samples (tissue, poop, birds) - fecal tests are $5-15 at the NC labs. I have yet to have a need for testing. Now, this is NC where necropsy is $15 for up to 8birds as well. Most states only have ONE lab and depending on where you live testing and necropsy can be on up toward $200.00

It pays to do some investigating to see what's available in the state that you live in.
Here's a list of most labs - just google them - most have their own website along with services provide, fee charts and instructions on what and how they test.

I completely agree. Even if you don't have an avian vet (or one who sees chickens) doing good research and checking with other people in your state (over in the state thread) can help. Our necropsies, here in Texas are $250. Make sure you read how to prepare your bird for a necropsy. I failed to do that and they were unable to tell me anything, so I lost my money and still didn't have an answer. Being prepared BEFORE an emergency (even having your chicken first aid kit ready) is much better when you are panicked, shocked, and unable to think clearly. Not to mention the seconds, minutes and hours your chicken suffers because you weren't prepared. Absolutely not pointing any fingers here because I was that chicken owner at one time. I like that @Wyorp Rock called regular vets to see if any of them see chickens. I actually have two real close to me but once I found the Avian vet I knew we were in better hands. It is truly amazing to me that they not only aren't teaching chickens in vet school but that more vets aren't seeking out more education on it because they could make a good amount of money from backyard chicken owners. The mindset comes from the past "why take it to the doctor, we have 10 others and we can replace this one easily". Too many of us love our chickens like some people love their cats and dogs....and let me tell you I became the butt of the jokes of the old timers around here when they found out I took my rooster to the vet. Thankfully, I love humour, and bantered right back at them, explaining it's incredibly hard to find an amazing rooster but if any of you men were mine, I could easily replace you! :lau You should have heard the laughter and coughs comin out of those sweet geezers! Love those guys. :love

I take it as valuable learning experience.

Wow, that's awesome your vet gave you that info. More info to help. I went and looked and though it has fewer ones then the Avian vet, I did find a poultry dvm that i could drive too. Thank you so much for sharing. :love

It'll certainly cut down on the number of panicked emails and phone calls I make to her.

I too have done phone investigations, calling vets near me.
Some will not have anything to do with anything chicken related and some "dog" vets will test their poop.

A phone call is free.
