Help My silkie she has wry neck ! She is back outside picture update

Oh well good, then I suspect the vinegar didn't really do any harm. That might explain why you're having to give her water by a dropper rather than her drinking it thought!

That would be nice if she drank on her own.

Ok so upper respiratory - upper wheezing. Godo ear. What color is the caking? can you possibly open her mouth and tell me if you see any thing cheesy? Any nodules? The roof of her mouth should be pink to pale pink and the little 'teeth' on the cleft should be obvious and sharp...

(though to me the cleft looks a bit open here)

...versus cheesy and nodular

I doubt you'll see the cheesiness but it does do good to rule it out.

If you get antibiotics, please get the right ones. Don't trust their advice. Oxytetracycline - read the label. It's Duramycin. (One of the rare moments I recommend it - note the date). It's best given in conjunction with Aureomycin. But if you start now with Duramycin at full strength for 14 days hopefully... Chick starter won't hurt - IF she's not of laying age.

Here are my three suggested shopping lists (depending on budget):

At least:
- Duramycin (oxytetracycline).
- polyvisol non-iron fortified ( already has vitamin A in it)
- Vitamin E (400-700 IU oil capsule for humans)-smallest bottle

Should get:
- acidophilis capsules or tablets (from the vitamin section of Walgreens) or Probios paste or powder (from TSC) - pick whichever is least expensive.
- VetRx - 2 ounces, rabbit or poultry formula are fine (if they have it - if not, sterile eye wash from Walgreens)

Would help in order of helpfulness:
- Pedialyte (unflavored) or poultry electrolytes
- terramycin or chloramphenicol eye ointment ("ophthalmic" ointment)

Ok Im back from the store I got polyvisol, chick starter, pedilyte, and tetracycline which is all the feed stores carry in this area. Not sure how to mix it though.

She looks ALOT better her eyes are open and she is even making that pering sound again

. I'm not saying she is out of the woods yet but I'm so happy to see her a little better she is even holding up her head enough to drink water on her own.

I can't thank you enough for your help I really think the vitamin is helping. As I said she is not cured but it's nice to hear her purr again.

OK, which tetracycline is it? Like which brand, does it say a number of grams per package, and how many ounces. We can figure that out really quick for you. You want the exact dosage for sure, not a hear-say dosage. So we'll get you taken care of. By the way, you have to make the meds fresh daily so only make the amount you'll use for her waterer. We'll break down the dosage to the container you have if you'll tell us what size waterer you're going to use.

YAY for her feeling better! I'm very very pleased as I tend to worry. I even had chicken-nightmares last night.

On the pedialyte use that as her water until you do the vitamins, then use it as the 'water' you use to mix crumbles into a damp mash. Remember she can't have yogurt. Nor can she have milk. 'cyclines and 'mycins don't mix with heavy milk products.

Were you clear on the pedialyte instructions?

Be sure as well to clean her eyes and nostrils daily. If you can't use sterile eye saline to flush, then at least clean with a clean washcloth and warm water to get the gunk away if her eyes gunk back up again.

I'm glad to hear she's making sweet noises. And most especially that she can drink some on her own.

/hugs!

It says Duramyciin-10 6.4oz bag

Poultry direction say use at a drug level of 400-800mg per gal per day. this is a 6.4 oz bag containing 100 gallon containing 100mg of drug.

Then it says for crd air sac disease use 400-800 for synovitis use 200-400mg 7-14 days

personally i find these directions confusing but I am using 1 quart container, she is in by herself. Also I gave her 1/4 tsp in the water she has now in a quart container.

OK, I have that one done up already and here's what I figured in a previous post or private email.

------------------
"OK here's the actual dosage math for this brand at 10g per 6.4 ounce package.

OK according to this package, they want you to dose at about 500mg - 800mg per gallon of water for chickens. (http://www.durvet.com/L/119_L.pdf )
They state that the dosage will depend on the age of the bird (chicks get weaker strength), and how much they'll drink (birds that drink a lot get a little weaker strength).

10g = 10,000 mg. There are 10 grams in the package at 6.4 ounces.

Adults: 10,000 mg divided by 800mg = 12 doses per package.
12 doses = 6.4 ounces. 6.4/12 = 0.54 ounce per dose. We'll say 1/2 ounce per serving.
1/2 ounce = 3 teaspoons (kitchen measure spoon)

Babies: 10,000mg/800mg = 20 doses per package.
6.4 ounces/20 servings = 0.32 ounce per dose.
0.32 ounces = 2 teaspoons (kitchen measuring spoon).

I'd go with 3 teaspoons in one gallon of water as her sole drinking ration for 7-14 days. Because this is a 'cycline' you can't use yogurt with it, but because of his illness and how long he's going to be on, you will HAVE to use a probiotic. That means you'll want to either use acidophilis capsules from the grocer or druggist vitamin section, or a health food store, or the Probios powder or paste from a feed store.

-----------------------------------------
She absolutely must receive the full dosage of this - either the 2 or 3 teaspoons in the gallon in your case 3. One gallon = 4 quarts. 3 tea/4 = 0.75 teaspoon. Not quite a teaspoon. 3/4th's of a teaspoon is 1/4th of a tablespoon if you have anything that measures that way. So replace the water you're giving her which is underdosing with one with 3/4th of a teaspoon of duramycin to the quart of water. Something between 1/2 and 1 teaspoon.
