Hens Crop Not Empting at Night Please help

Hi,

After reading your post it seems she is blocked. Hay or even mulch hay is not the best bedding. Pine shavings are the best and DO NOT use cedar. The grit or oyster shells are ok in limited amounts. Should only need about a tablespoon full per 5 lbs. of feed. Water is the key. The cropo will not empty anything without water. They do not need a 24/7 supply of store bought feed but they do need a 24/7 supply of water. They can have greens in their diet such as small grass clippings and dandelion greens. I would offer water and lay off the feed until the crop is cleaned out.
This is a great reply. Another thing that can cause a blockage is a stuck egg or tumor. Get yourself some KY Jelly and latex glove and perform an exam.

She was laying eggs every day up until about 4 days ago.
I don't feel now its a blockage, however, sour crop. She's pooping small normal poops. Not like the other girls. She seems a tiny bit better. She's eating, drinking and showing who's boss in the pecking order. :)

Thanks Shell for the info on the canesten.

I put baking soda in the water today. She seems to be more perky. I'm hoping she turns the corner.

The ladies are suppose to be in bed, I have a heat lamp on, its keeping them up. I checked on her and the crop seems to be getting smaller. It felt the size of a golf ball, I could feel the muscles tighting. So she got 9hrs for it to go down over night. We will see. Keeping my fingures crossed.

I have good news to report, I have an empty crop and lots of poop. :). She isn't fluffed up either. The backing soda seemed to worked. I went back in last night and the Girls were still up, one was sun bathing on the blanket. So cute when they do that. I decided to turn the heat lamp off, I worried all last night she would get cold, she was fine. Fortunately we are a few degrees warmer.

Oh pwand! Isn't that a great feeling. Having well birds. Small accomplishments can be so so relieving. Yay.
