How about forming a nationwide Organization

Well paralegals certainly have chickens and that would be me! The notion of backyard chickens is really a very local issue (i.e. zoning, animal control); truthfully it's not the kind of issue that gets lawyers excited. Still you have a great idea but you don't need legal counsel to start an organization like the one you imagine.

But you know, I was recently exchanging emails with a woman who is trying to legalize backyard chickens in Arlington MA, and she has done a fabulous job of compiling information for her planning board and I think her argument for chickens is solid and I think she will prevail.

I'll ask her if I can do a post here on BYC linking to her to her website and the information she put together; it s great model for people trying to do the same thing.

THANK YOU PYHLISS, FOR YOUR INPUT. I HOPE TO HEAR FROM YOUR FRIEND.MY ORIGINAL NAME FOR THE ORGANIZATION WAS POULTRY OWNERS RIGHTS COALITION, OR P O R C, BUT SOMEONE SUGGESTED PLO OR POULTRY LIBERATION ORGANIZATION. I AGREE IT IS A LITTLE CONFRONTATIONAL. I'M OPEN TO OTHER SUGGESTIONS FROM CONCERNED POULTRY OWNERS AS FAR AS A NAME THAT IS TO THE POINT, YET DOES NOT CONJURE UP IMAGES OF CHICKENS RIOTING IN THE STREETS. EVEN-- BACKYARD POULTRY OWNERS COALITION-- SOUNDS A LITTLE TAMER.PLEASE TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK. ED

Here is her web site:

Backyard Chicks In Arlington Massachusetts

One thing that she did that I really like is Other Town's Laws which is summary of towns in Massachusetts as well as other parts ofthe country.

When local governments are confronted with a demand from citizen's to change a law for things like backyard chickens, one thing they will always do is look to see what other local communities have done and they especially look at the laws of communties that are similiar to their own in terms of demographics, population, density, geography and he level of development.

I think all these Ideas are great!!! In my town of Warrrensburg ny, I was informed that I have to pay money,About 50$ to be heard by the town board. I feel this is unconstitutional and plan to fight this even before I address the chicken situation. As I stated earlier too many of our rights are being taken away by a select few and this has got to stop. Its almost as sad, as a company like Monsanto, controlling most of the seed thats grown in the US.I know something as silly as keeping chickens in our backyards may seem trite, but next they will be telling you you cant have a garden in your yard, or you can't sunbathe in your yard. I seek moderation and reason in all I speak about. I will not let this one go!!!

This is totally my kind of thing! And I would completely support it… I would like to consider perhaps a broader scope, supporting any common sense things that would save energy and enhance quality of life: like preventing bans on hanging laundry outdoors to dry (actually illegal in many places, if you can believe it), home gardening, (also banned my many ordinances and neighborhood covenants), and home chicken flocks. Surely having the production of home grown food and eggs, spread out over a large area, would minimize the impact of waste (I compost all of my organic stuff); cut fuel consumed for food transport, and help the environment. In my little town, at least until the fifties or sixties, everyone had a cow, chickens, and a couple of feeder hogs in the back yard. Granted, at times, there was some aroma from all this, but a ride by one of our huge commercial chicken houses will amaze you over the incredible reek!

Here in town we have the Coalition of Lawrence Chicken Keepers, or C.L.U.C.K.

Anyone have a word to substitute for the L that would apply to a nationwide org?

We recently got an ordinance on the books for up to 20 per backyard, chickens or ducks, no roosters, and all laws that apply to other pets apply, such as care, humane treatment, noise, and whatnot. It's very basic and vague- just the way we like it!! I posted it on here a few days back...

It's a fabulous idea, and it's a good thing to do it while it's a fad- getting in NatGeo and other national mags and all...Yay, Chickers!!!
