How about forming a nationwide Organization

There already IS an organization that stands up for chicken welfare (like the Poultry Liberation Front idea). It is called United Poultry Concerns - and the premise is that chickens should not be exploited even in small backyard flocks. It is a vegan organization, that believes people should not eat chicken eggs, chicken meat, etc.

ANYHOW - back to the Association for Urban, Suburban, and Rural Backyard Poultry Keepers (better name, better acronym forthcoming) - I would ask, is this idea is already within the mission of another existing organization?

It is a lot of work to make a new organization - and too often it is easy to become focused on the organization instead of the work that the organization sets out to do. I know, as the founding board member of a couple of organizations, and as the first paid staff person at a couple others.

Is this within the realm of SPPA? (Society for the Preservation of Poultry Antiquities) or is that org too focused on heritage breeds vs. modern backyard poultry keeping?

This org we're talking about would potentially:
* develop a clearinghouse of resources for backyard poultry keeping - compiling some of the best fact sheets from extension services across the country, for example.
* develop a set or sets of model bylaws for urban, suburban, and rural situations
* develop support materials, to be customized locally, for chicken law reform
* play a role in speaking up for small flock poultry keepers at the national level
* provide strategic advice and mentoring to local poultry organizations
* provide information to local advocates to support state law revisions where needed, perhaps in conjunction with small farm advocate organizations (where they exist - there could be an affiliate status)

What else?

It could focus on information distribution and dissemination, and thus be an educational, non-profit charity.

I actually have some connections that might be able to help make something like this happen. I would think that a board of directors might come in part from several of the local orgs that have been working on poultry advocacy. If this sounds of interest - I'd suggest, as a next step, to brainstorm a list of people and/or organizations to invite to the discussion - and thence to have a conference call to determine whether this is an idea with serious interest.

I think it does have merit, and would like to hear what others think of the above outline.

In order for such an organization to be financially viable, those of us who have legal status to keep chickens would probably still need to become involved as members/supporters. Personally, that is an org that I'd be willing to support financially - but I'm the type of person who is a member of many orgs.

Again, I'd like to hear what others think!?

Your outline sounds great. You sound like you know what your doing. Someone needs to get this idea organized. As many members as are on this board and as fast as it's growing it would be a great launching point. Sounds like someone needs to talk to Nifty about it though.

To vermont girl, and gilbertine: Vermont girl, all I can say is wow!! You certainly have your act together. I Just wanted an organization that would, protect the rights of people who would like to execise their rights to keep some poultry in urban towns and cities. I didnt want to get real crazed about it, I just dont want others to tell me what I can and cant do on my own property, as long as I dont infringe upon the rights of others. The one neighbor who called the town zoning officer, told me that in the morning when she has her coffee the chickens are quite loud. These are hens mind you, so the cackle, and at times are quite loud. I asked her if the dogs constantly barking in the neighborhood bothered her. She told me the dogs barking bothered her, but there was nothing she could do about that. I told her that if she had talked to me personally, I would have made sure the hens were kept in their house untill her coffee was finished. She told me she wouldnt complain again, but this is only a temporary fix. I want to know that I will never be bothered again.
Gilbertine-- I havent seen your facebook organization, but it sounds really cool. I'll be checking it out tonight.-ED

What about:
Poultry Nation?
This would include urban and rural flock owners. We live in a small town in Texas and have no problem raising, producing, etc...
Just a thought here but the current residents of the White House just started a Victory Garden, a take off from the 30's economic climate.
Maybe this attempt could be modeled/included on the current economic situation.
This is a great group of people 20 some thousand strong. If a common theme could be formed and then a name chosen this would be a very strong lobby group.

To ejstoner:

I can't fathom the kind of person that would complain about hens singing in the morning, much less turn you in to the town zoning officer! I mean, at least these animals serve a purpose other than to bark all night and poop in their neighbor's yard! I may be slightly beligerant by nature, but if somebody turns me in to the government, they have, in the immortal words of Jed Clampett: Done muddied my creek!

To Gilbertine- I think she really felt bad afterwards, But she is living alone , about 65 or so, retired. She doesent seem very happy. I went around to my other neighbors, before I knew who it was, and they didnt even know I had chickens. Right now, Its more about my rights to use my property as I wish, as long as I dont trample on someone elses rights.

Well said, I must be reminded sometimes that not everyone cares for chickens, dogs, motorcycles, or whatever... it takes cooperation, tolerance, and understanding to make a society run smoothly.
