how long do I keep them before letting them out?

I agree with old cowboy on the reasoning behind not flying pouters. I had most rollers and ferals with one fantail mutt thrown in I just always kept them in the pen for a month before letting them out.

just got 2 west england tumbling pigeons how long before letting themm out of cage ? the old owner moved away dont want them going back to old house hawk ate at least 4 already ( from what old owner said!!

The general rule of thumb for most tumbler/roller breeds is about a month PROVIDED you place them into a wire cage on the rooftop each day and put them under a strict diet to get them used to the idea that you are their master and provide their food. They should be kept relatively hungry.

I have seen rollers and other tumbling breeds return home after being away for a year or more when the above is not done.

Since you only have two birds, you are better off to lock them up and allow them to breed. You can fly their youngsters instead.

I have had birds stay from 5 days, settled and trap trained... I even had one escape from the shipping box on arrival.. it even stayed right here... i just let out my kit and they gathered him up.. he just wanted to stay out.. but in a couple days it trapped..

Then again after a month i have had them fly off never to be seen again.. LOL its all about the temperment of the birds.. but i think a week is adequate, if you settle them and make them feel comfortable..They will stick around..

I am talking rollers ,, dont have a clue of other breeds, homers, never get out again.. far as i know.. you have to breed your own..

I might be getting some more pigeons, how long do I keep them penned up before letting them out?

The longer you keep them penned up the better your chances are for them to orientate to your loft. Breed age and type of pigeon all are major factors when getting pigeons to bond to your loft. The younger the bird the easier the bonding. Some adult homers well never bond to another loft. Your best advice should come from the fancier you purchased the birds from in a perfect world.
