I’m new to chickens and I’m getting silkies

My Pet Chicken is the only supplier I know of who sells sexed Silkies.....they are notoriously difficult to sex, so if they are sold out I don't know what to tell you. You might be able to get older pullets by doing a little checking around. I hatched out Silkies - 9 eggs hatched, 9 roos. <sigh> And I have to tell you, owning both standards and Silkies in the same flock, that their crow isn't much different than the crow of a big rooster! In fact, all of mine actually had a more high pitched, fingernails-down-the-blackboard sound to them.

And I see @Pork Pie Ken beat me to the suggestion, but I'm leaving it up anyway! :hugs

Hi! Thank you for the info. I got lucky and actually found a new supply of female chick silkies on MyPetChicken! They are ‘available’ so let’s hope I’m fast enough to get some for myself!

:welcome There’s so many helpful, knowledgeable folks here and I’m sure you’ll find this site a very useful resource.

I can’t really help with the Silkie question as I’m in UK but I’m a member of various poultry pages on Facebook and often see all sorts of breeds (inc Silkies) pop up for sale from local hobby breeders. Maybe there’s a Facebook page in your state?

I have recently decided that I wanted to own chickens as pets. I’ve always wanted birds but birds like parrots and doves seemed to be a hassle. Then I realized that chickens exist. I’m going for the fluff ball of the chicken world, the silkie! I already have food, a feeder, waterer, heat lamp, and ways of containing them for the first few weeks. Forgot to get grit but that is easily found. The only problem is finding a supplier that can sell you only females. I had found one before on MyPetChicken but it sold out in 30 minutes! Now I’m having trouble finding a supplier that can get me only female silkie chicks. Where I live, roosters aren’t allowed. (Urban area). I do know silkie roosters are quieter then your typical large fowl, I still dont think I could pull it off.
There are also very few places here where I can locally get chickens and I doubt they’d even have silkies if I found one! So shipping is the only option I really have. I only want 5 females! Thanks in advance!
If you want sexed silkies from my pet chicken check their website early Monday and/or Tuesday mornings. The system refreshes those days and if someone has cancelled an order or if their hatches were better than expected those are the days they will show up. Be prepared to pay for them right then tho because if you wait even an hour they'll most likely be gone.
Good luck!!!
