I wonder how effective an addon would be if we automatically sent peeps that started a thread a message that said "hey, could you come give us some closure on this thread?"

... but I can't think of a way that we'd know which peeps to message and which ones not to message.

IMO, the BEST solution would be for our members to reply to the threads and say something similar... like "This thread has been super interesting to read. Hey <tag membername>, any updates?

I think that might be a great idea! I sometimes forget to let everyone know what happened too!

I have gone to the source and politely ask for the outcome

Maybe...Since there is a way to link the thread to the member maybe create a button on the thread that members can select to generate a "Update Us Please" message...?

When you read through 8 pages of an old thread that has no ending...
I am one of THOSE people that read the last chapter of a book to see if I want to read the whole thing.

Sometimes you are reading a whole 100 pages and it ends like nothing

I think part of the problem is that most people tend to think they are the only one with the particular issue. Its a basic human trait, "it only happens to me!" type of thing so why follow up. But it doesn't, it happens to MANY of us! I too hate it when I am searching for an answer in an old thread and the entire conversation comes to a grinding halt. Don't they realize they were right on the cusp of giving me the answer and now I will never know??!!

Wow, that's a really fun / interesting idea!

I'm not sure how hard that would be to implement, but I'll add it to our list of suggestions!

I often like to do a "proof-of-concept" manually first before developing / implementing automated systems, so maybe we could do some tests!

Ideally we'd have a bunch of members reach out to the thread-starters of topics where things were left hanging, then we'd see what works and what doesn't, then try to automate the process.

So, maybe when y'all see examples like this you can try posting in the thread or messaging them privately and request an update, then post the link to the thread here and we'll see if they ever update the thread!

now... GO!!!

I follow a million threads.
I have seen people return many many months later to give an update...sometime years later...when asked for one.
I've also seen people not bother with an update when asked too.

I love the reminder/update button idea.

I'll make y'all a deal: Let's prove that the idea (sending messages brings people back) works by sending the notes out manually, and tracking it here, and if it ends up looking good, we'll develop tools to help make this easier, or even automated!
