From someone who has a snake, I would never feed it chickens. Some may not agree with the fact that I have 2 rats that I use to breed Pinky rats for our snake. Does it really matter that she feeds her snakes chickens? Unless of course you sold her the chickens and told her they were only for eggs etc.. Still you can't control what people do with them once they walk out the door with them. Sounds more to me like she knows you will bite easily so she is having a go at you.

OR you could tell her that you feed your chicks snakes

... It seems like she's not smart enough to know better.

There is a difference between feeding a snake a mouse or a rat and feeding it a little baby chick. At least the mouse or rat had a chance to live and the chick is just a baby. Rats and mice can't give people great tasting food, but a chick when it reaches adult hood, can(either in the form of meat(roosters) or eggs (hens).

My extra chicks go to snakes, but it's not information I throw around on a site such as this because I know it could irk a lot of people. I couldn't imagine volunteering that information face to face with someone I know loves chickens . . . I wouldn't say she's an idiot, but certainly thoughtless. I tend to think she may have thought of it as a sort of common ground y'all share and could talk about. Some people just have the knack of never saying the right thing.

To those asking why not just feed it rats . . . rats are extremely expensive, depending on whether you're buying live or frozen it can be five to ten times more expensive, and many reptile owners turn to poultry as an alternative. The snakes do well on them. I don't see the difference between using the bird as food while a chick vs waiting for it to grow up before slaughter, and you did say you sell chicks for eggs and meat . . . well, that's meat. Look at it in that light and you should feel better.

I will add that I never, EVER feed a live chick to a snake, making sure to humanely dispatch them beforehand. It hurts every time because I love chickens, but I feel much better feeding the bodies to my other beloved pets rather than wastefully disposing of them.

What about the poor little rat trying desperatly to wiggle away as you hold him by the tail....and he is going squeek, squeeeeck, squeeeeeeek as he sees the snake coming for him and he know the end is near?

Feeding rats and mice is more common than chicks. I did not mean to rub you the wrong way, and if I did, I'm sorry.

Chicks are larger than mice, but the actual meat ratio isn't as good as a mouse. The main concern would be money or making the snake's head grow. Apparently she doesn't realize that, though.
