From first chicks to first eggs, and every grain and pellet in between. I absolutely LOVE having and raising Chickens.
The waiting for the first eggs and one by one filling an egg carton. Trying to bake something special with each one.
The Rewarding factor is amazing, and best expressed in the knowledge our kids have cared for the chickens and can do it for themselves.

Your chickens are beautiful! I love their coloring!! What breed are they?
Lol
What they are and what they were ""supposed"" to be...
We were told barred rock & got saphire gems. We were told red rangers & got isa browns & Easter Eggers.
Thankfully we did get cinnamon queen, wyandotte and a comet labeled correctly. And our batch of cornish crossed had also been labeled correctly.
I love having PRETTY EGGS. So it's a dilemma because we did want to initially just raise heritage breeds for eggs and cornish cross for meat, now we are attached to our random flock and are leaning away from cornish crosses.
I love looking at the new baby chicks, but dislike the "risk" you assume taking home a bunch of birds if they turn out to be a different breed. We do prefer hand raising them so they are friendly and easy to handle.
It's a battle to walk away from a breed I really want. The purchase minimums usually decide for me.
How am I supposed to sneak 6-15 birds in?? Seriously. Don't think stores or hatcheries have thought it thru. Backyard birds are way more common these days, especially vs hobby farms or production farms & ranches.
Haven't figured out how...

That’s interesting... any.. and all of the chicks I’ve ever gotten came from TSC or feed stores.. here and there... and they all have been correct on breed.. and out of the total of 29 chicks over three years... I’ve only gotten one rooster that was supposed to be a pullet... the other two came from the straight run bin so of course your chances are higher... I only have mine for eggs... and of course chicken hugs💕.... I love my beautiful egg basket! I hope you don’t mind me sharing....
