I need opinions ( update It did not go well)

The chicken is a favorite of my kids too. My son suggested it and now I have requests from them too. Of course my son suggested I make 10 hens to go with the rooster. Even in chicken ornaments chicken math comes into play.

I am not sure yet how I want to sell these. I know I will do a show since the one I did last year for scouts went rather well. I looked at doing online but I just don't know what I am doing at this point. I have never tried to make anything from crafts.

I will see what I can do on penguins. I am working on a duck one tonight. I usually make a sample one and see if the kids like it before I try to make more. I was thinking a wood duck one would be pretty.

Opinions?

I'm with your husband on artsy-craftsy stuff. I never buy cute, only something I can use. Wallets, belts, socks, coin pouch, pocket tools, knives, etc. In these economic times, who buys cute? In past poor economic times, the things that sold were necessities and luxuries. (have you checked the price of gold and gems lately?)

Trust me on this....I just learned that someone on this forum paid $10,000 for eight chickens and sells a show trio for $1,000. We are not living in hard economic times, IMO.

They are cute and they will sell...but can you sell enough to make the type of cash you are wanting to make, is the question.

You're a few steps away from making old-tyme christmas stockings to hang up for Santa. They sell for 25-50 apiece with very little material cost at my local flea market. Mom made personalized ones for us kids.

I think if you made realistic/stylized renditions by breed chicken patches for quilting, tapestries, etc you would find a ready year round market right here on the forum.

I think it's a great idea. Now is the time people are buying for Christmas. If you make them as ornaments you will do great. If would buy three and pay for shipping. PM me if you'd like to do this. Maybe you won't even need to go to the fair.

Good Job! I love them! I would like to buy a few. I sew purses and up-cycle feed bags. sell them at local craft events and my parents store. I love to buy other peoples handmade items. You could probably sell them individual and as sets.

What sells me is cute, unique, price and HANDMADE. Someone set down took the time to make it. I appreciate that!

I think they are cute, and people who buy crafty, folk artsy will like them and purchase them. I would not purchase them at a craft fair, I tend to be more of a utilitarian purchaser, and almost never purchase decoratives or "dustables", if I see something like that at a craft show that I fall in love w/ I tend to go home and make it myself.

As to making money at it, that would depend on how much materials and time are invested including time and gas driving to the fairs and fees for selling vs how much you charge for them. And you never know what it going to take off like hot cakes, look at the person who made "bubba teeth", and snuggies, and the woman who started stamping blouses w/ potato stamps, they all are rich from humble beginings.
