If you kept only one breed...

The question is simple: if you could only keep one breed, whether or not you have it now, which one would you choose? I realize that this is a hard question, as a lot of people keep different breeds for different reasons. But the fun questions are rarely the easy ones.

I love my welsummer girl. She's a little flighty and not cuddly, but she's the first bird to run to me and check things out. Her eggs are stunning too!

Rhode Island Red is my go-to. Good layers of large eggs and dual purpose.

I don’t even have any but I’m currently obsessed with Salmon Faverolles. I’d love to have a flock of them.

Chanteclers, by far. They are beautiful, cold-hardy, decent meat birds, and good layers. I find them to be a most practical fowl suited for backyard life, with no small measure of intelligence and the ability to evade predators. I breed buff chantecler bantams to the Standard of Perfection.

Hands down, Swedish Hedemora. I had never heard of them before I ordered some rare breed eggs from my favorite hatchery, but the one bird I wound up with is phenomenal so far. It’s perfect for my climate, which is bitter cold in winter, and they’re supposed to be decent layers even through winter. Small combs and wattles, an extra bit of down fluff/feathers, and the personality on this one is amazing. From hatch, it’s been the calmest, most personable bird I have.

runner up would be sebrights. So much personality packed into a tiny bird.

I have mostly Orpington now, they are sweet birds and lazy egg producers. My last flock was all Dominique, they were hardy birds and good layers. Would have them again

Sulmtaler for sure! I like my Bielefelder as well... but if I would have to choose it would be Sulmtaler.
