Illinois...

We have poults!!!

And they have feets!!! Or at least so far they do.

One was out this morning (no pips last night when I went to bed) looks like a little slate or maybe lavender.

The second spent 3 hours trying to zip so I decided to check what was wrong. The membrane had glued over the chick's wing and it could finish turning to zip. It never would have made it out I don't think. It actually was starting to tear or really irritate some of it's skin trying to turn.

I got it unstuck and it's out. Can't tell color yet. It does have a bit of a raw open navel should be fine though.

The third pip has totally zipped and flipped the top now I'm just waiting for it to climb out.

!!!!! Eeek!!!!

Little turklets!

2 days early!

Feet:weeCongratulations

Did you win the eggs?
My shipped Coronation Sussex eggs are dong OK so far. I purchased 8, 10 were shipped, 6 started developing. Shipped eggs are a little tricky, but sometimes we can get lucky. If the buyer feedback is good & the seller's been doing it a while, it's worth a try. (You can call it a "Mother's Day" gift if you need a justification.)

I'm willing to give you some incubation tips. Heck, I would even hatch them for you..... but of course I don't want to take the fun away from your kids.

I did win. Literally the very last second. Most of her other auctions only had 8 eggs and went over 50-60 bucks. I snagged 12 for 37. I was so excited! Now i want to try to snag some SLO from the breeder who got hers from the greenfire farms, carolina chicks and ewe crazy farms.

I seriously was thinking about asking you to incubate these since we know the coolerbator works so well. My dad was going to see about using our old laptop fan to make mine a circulating inky, but i dont know if he'll get to it in time. But when i was there Saturday the coolerbator looked pretty full of eggs.....

There will be room if you like. Sadly, my chickens are having fertility issues. I pulled all the infertile eggs & quitters last night. I'm down to 20. I set so many eggs to see what would happen. My laced orps are only about 70% fertile, but my lav roo is failing miserably = NONE this time! He's young & enthusiastic..... but not doing it right. My Dec seramas just started laying, and some were fertile. However, Teddy is not fertilizing MaiMai or Digger at all. Since they started laying last September, neither hen has ever had a fertile egg. I want mini silkies.

I started collecting again on Fri, so let me know if you want to add eggs to my next trial. I'm going to move the eggs into my "hatcher" so the Cooler-bator will be empty tomorrow.

:celebrate
Yay!!! Congrats!
Crank up the humidity if you can.

.... and don't forget to post pics!

I will have to do that they're so stinking cute!!

This morning we have 5 out and another zipping. We got our first black from the slates. I think we also have two slates and one self blue and one I'm not sure on. It will of course even easier to tell when they are dry.

Feet:weeCongratulations

They're so darling.

Little number 3 is still alive and doing okay for now. Belly still needs to heal more before I'll feel really confident about it's chances.

We decided to cull little number three tonight as the umbilical hernia wasn't closing and was progressively getting worse. The poult was getting weak.

We had a bunch more hatch today and I think we're up to 9 right now. We took the time in the hatching lull to move all the poults to the brooder. We are using our brooder plate for them until there are too many to keep under it. Thank you TSC for having a clearance brooder plate last fall I only wish we could have bought all three you guys had. It's a pretty large brooder plate and the poults seem content so far, and it can also be used as a coop heater for winter. We've used it for frost bitten birds but never for chicks yet.
I'm feeling a bit worried about the chicken eggs with this humidity for the turkeys I hope I don't drown them but they aren't due until tomorrow or the next day so I'm trying to hold off worrying.

Hopefully there will be a bunch more in the morning currently there are two more pips. They seem to be coming in spurts in spite of moving the eggs around inside the incubator to account for possible cold or warm spots. They remind me of quail there's nothing I see no pips even and then walk back by the incubator 2-3 hours later and there's 2-3 more poults.

There is one more little slate in the Bator that hasn't got it's legs under it yet. It keeps tumbling backwards. In my experience chicks with this issue generally improve after some extra time and absorbing a bit of the yolk sack. As the umbilical had just closed it's belly is huge!

I feel really bad about the little one we had to cull. Those decisions are always so hard despite being wrapped up and having over 24 hours there just wasn't improvement it just kept getting worse.

It's easy to forget that when poults or chicks are popping out like popcorn and cheeping and happy that not all of them make it for whatever reason. Some just don't.

So far I think we have 3 slates 1-2 self blues a black and the rest appear white but I'll get a better idea after tomorrow. DH2B moved them to the brooder while I was busy and I didn't want to pull them all out from under the brooder plate.

The second youngest poult right now looks white to me so far and is having a bit of a balance issue still. DH2B thinks we should name it Tumble(short for tumbleweed) and give it to @Faraday40 since you guys have never seen a tumble weed and told me once you wanted to see one.

;) Do you remember that?

My little silkie serama is still alive. It's getting stronger, but still so tiny. Hard to say if it even grew. Here it is next to its laced orp hatch-mate. They got to go outside for a little grass time & sunshine yesterday. They're 2 weeks old now.

:loveAwww.. I love her!
You know, you may be able to go down in the Guinness world records for having the smallest chicken!

I've so far collected 3 of Phee's eggs to incubate in hopes of getting a micro chicken!:fl

Has anyone ever seen this before and know what is up? Jaspers comb is turning purple. I noticed it a little right after I picked him up....just barely. Now it seems to be spreading. He's acting fine though. If it were winter, I'd suspect frostbite.
