At one point I had $150.00+ on "hold". After almost 20 days I contacted the last few buyers and asked them to release the funds. They knew nothing about it. It's all Paypal & E-bay. That week I had to ship eggs out of my money, not chicken money. I wasn't very happy about that

Since I include shipping costs in my Buy-it-now auctions and pack VERY well (which equals high shipping cost), sometimes there's not much of a profit anyway, but when I can't have ANY of the money to use for shipping, it's not too fun. Ah well, everyone will still get their eggs fresh, safe and on time

I buy eggs from both ebay and here on BYC often. I haven't had very good luck with the eggs hatching. The sellers does a great job with packing most of the time. I buy eggs from people who has a breed of chicken that I really want but can't find them as live chicks.
I bought eggs from a local this year and didn't get a chick one out of them but I bought more eggs from this person earlier this month and I have only thrown out 4 and the rest are thriving so far. There just isn't a guarantee on these kinds of things and people needs to realize that before they spend their money.

I am sorry you are having to deal with these kinds of people

I know you do not want to hear it because we are all really just venting frustration, but the Post Office was not designed to ship eggs or chicks.

The Post Office was designed to ship inert stuff like paper and household goods, things that are not affected by freezing/boiling temperatures, being misdirected for several days, getting a little damp while being put on/off trucks in the rain/snow, sitting in a shed over a weekend while they are off...etc.

The poultry community decided we could use the Postal Service to ship live bird embryos and live baby birds. The Postal Service has tried to accomodate, but they really are not designed for it. This system has worked surprisingly well when you consider the situation.

The Postal Service has frequently tried to stop allowing these kinds of shipments, as it is impossible for them to guarantee the kind of humane and perfect handling required for 100% survial of live bird embryos and live bird babies without completely retrofitting their systems. We always complain when they try to stop it, but also complain when they allow us to ship and we get the results their imperfect system results in.

I do not work for the postal service. I am thankful to the Postal Service for safely delivering the boxes of chicks and eggs that have allowed us to keep a flock of breeds and quality we wanted, as opposed to being limited to the breeds and quality available locally.

Educating your buyers is the key, as we will not be changing the post office any time soon.

And there will always be that customer that cannot be pleased. That is a fact of business anywhere.

Has anyone found another option to shipping eggs and chicks?

My descriptions are detailed and long-winded about this stuff... this guy is one in a thousand... I guess it was just my turn to get one! I wish that I would have come across a thread like this before I had to deal with him... been with ebay for 8 years and he was my first neg feedback...
as long as "1handfull" is in the house... there are no educated people outside!

That's the spirit!! I'd also put a block on him on ebay too, so he can't bid on your auctions any more. There's one in every crowd, and if you are on ebay long enough, they will find you! I've been selling on ebay for 9 years, and only had one negative from a person much like yours. I was devastated at first, as I bend over backwards to please my customers. In the end, you can't please them all, no matter what you say or do. Maybe in the future, you should read the bidders feedback as to what they leave for others. Then, if you think they may be trouble, you can cancel the bid and block them from bidding. Been there, done that a couple of times, and glad I did!

Sorry you are dealing with this, Rebel Rooster. What a nightmare. Now, in response to some of the suggestions and thoughts on this thread..... I *never* label a package with "Eggs" or "Hatching Eggs" or anything of the sort. I have been shipping and receiving eggs via the mail since literally the '70s.... hundreds of shipments over the years. I have seen time and time again that the worst damaged packages are the ones with all sorts of "handle with care" and "eggs" markings/stickers on them. Of course, as with anything else, this isn't *always* the case. Sometimes marked packages arrive in pristine condition and sometimes unmarked ones look like someone drove a bulldozer over them. In general though, I have better luck with unmarked packages or those with just a small, discreet "fragile" written on the sides. The ones that are over the top with all sort of stickers frequently seem to be the ones that are completely destroyed. That is just my experience, YMMV.

As far as where to buy and sell birds/eggs. Let's be real here, no site has some magical bubble around it that keeps the dishonest folks in or out. To be perfectly honest, I have had some awesome transactions on Ebay and I have met some real crooks on BYC. As a matter of fact, the only really bad transaction I have had with eggs on Ebay is someone who also sells on BYC (fairly typical that people sell on more than one site). She sent eggs that had clearly been incubated for about 10 days and quit. It could have been a case of just mailing eggs that had been pulled from a nest, rather than a purposeful sort of thing, but that in itself is the mark of a bad seller in my opinion. We candle all eggs (even ones we send for free) and make sure they are in good condition with good quality shells.

Anyway folks, there are good and bad people everywhere. That is just reality. We all have choices in where we buy and sell. I do think your chances of a good transaction may be higher here because of the nature of the site, but we all know there are crooks even here.
