I'm so old I Remember when:

We had to bring our own lunches, but they still had milk brought in: 5 cents for plain, 10 for chocolate. Order and pay first thing in the morning, get your milk at lunch! It was a treat for me to be able to buy a milk, especially since I would only drink the chocolate.❤️
We didn't have that option when I was in school.

Well, believe me when I tell you, both white and chocolate milk now cost .50 unless you buy the lunch, then the milk comes with it. But the amount of kids that say they can't drink milk now, it's sad. I'm so old I remember when only one kid in our whole school was allergic to milk. She put orange juice in her cereal because none of these fake milks existed yet

I don’t think anyone in our school couldn’t drink milk.
We were given little glass bottles (I think they were 1/3 of a pint). It was compulsory to drink it - I suppose they wanted to make sure everyone got some good nutrition. We got a break mid-morning which was called the milk break. And we had to line up to get our little bottle and then return the empty bottle before going back to class.
I have always loved milk so it was good with me - but I do remember some of the kids made a fuss and said they didn’t like milk. They had to drink it anyway.
Definitely no chocolate option in my day!

Always been suspicious of all these ‘allergies’ kids seem to have today. Peanut, lactose, and gluten allergies suddenly exploded in the population just about the time we started being over protective and over pampering of our kids, not that these allergies don’t exist but everyone seems to want to be on the bandwagon. IMO

I think being overprotective has done alot if not so good. Including but no limited to drinking water out the hose and playing in ditches.

when I was vegan for a while, I started reacting to a bunch of stuff like nuts and gluten, when I started eating meat and dairy I was able to eat all that stuff again

There is actually a scientific study (not a chance I will find it) that demonstrated a connection between high levels of hygiene in early childhood and later allergies.
Something about how exposure to grime as a little kid primes your immune system in a good way.
My mother used to say a bit of dirt never did any harm and provided trace elements (said, for example, in the context of pulling a carrot and just shaking it off before eating it -which horrified my grandmother).
Turns out my mother may have had the right idea all along.

I also get a kick out of this compulsion we seem to be developing to living as close as possible to a sterile life. Just as you’re saying a bit of dirt, or a less than sterile environment are not more often than not what a person/ child needs to be exposed to in order to have a healthy immune system.

BTW, I’ve eaten a few dirty carrots in my day also. Still alive.
