In a Panic over Heat Lamp Fires...

My condolences for the loss of animals and the woman.

When it comes to a gamble of human or animal loss, I would defer to NO man-made heat source at all. Face it, what's more important? I know lot of folks don't have the ability to construct such, but I have heat-producing emitters that are mounted in brooder lamps (which are housed in aluminum ducts) that produce heat in the brutal temps every so often we have here. I put old rugs or carpet squares under them for temporary comfort in those cases, but I won't use a "heat lamp" in such cases. I don't trust them because of their ability to shatter and start a fire. Can they survive without this?......Yes. But I want them to be under as little stress as possible. AGAIN, if in doubt of the safety, shieid the wind off the birds, and hope for the best. According to whatever species you are dealing with, it boils down to 1) Basic survival, and 2) Survival with dimished stress. I raise Bobwhites only, and can't give any advise on other breeds in such situations. However, there are some very educated folks on this board (JJMR, and others) that can help with other breeds. Do what you can afford in an economical fashion, but by all means, be rational when it comes to providing comfort to poultry when human life COULD be in jeparody.
