I figured this thread would have more hype and be on page 20 by now.

I think most people who visit this site, are more interested in having pets, and goo goo eyeing over their birds over how 'cute' they are; as opposed to actually consuming them= like they are meant to be.

the number of people who give the roos away cuz they can't "stand to see them killed or eaten", is just as rediculous.

Agreed, but I know that I wanted chickens for pets and eggs, and that before I ever brought chickens on my property I was in this forum and all over the rest of the internet, researching the best way to cull. I wanted to be prepared, both for unwanted roosters and in case (knock wood) I ever did have a predator problem and wind up with a severely injured chicken for whom I needed to end their suffering.

And, now my chicken ... erm, let's not say obsession. Let's say "fascination", shall we? My chicken "fascination" has grown so that I have an incubator, where I thought I'd never ever do that, I have 23 silkie eggs in that incubator and am working on them a tractor from an upcycled 7x14x6 dog run, and ... and ... I am making decisions on what kind I want my 26 meat birds to be after I build them a tractor.

I don't think we need to alienate people who "just" want pets, because that can change over time, and even people who "just" want pets can come looking for help and advice for the eventuality when they have to help one of their babies by letting it go. And I don't mind helping people learn, whether it's just so they can help one who is injured, or so they can process their extra roos - or so they can keep healthy, humanely-raised-and-slaughtered chicken on their table year-round.

I still wish this thread would be made a sticky at the top. I've asked and I think others have. Maybe the mods are just super busy...

Anybody needing someone doing an instructional workshop on their meaties in WV? I would love to do one of these! If you got the meaties and interested people, PM me and see what we can work out! Been killin' and cleanin' birds since I was 10....got the hang of it now.

I've put my info here, but I do plan on doing another "class" at my house when these meaties are ready for processing. I've got straight run this time, and plan on doing the males at 7 weeks, female at 8 weeks, so that puts me at about Oct 29-30 for the boys and Nov 5-6 for the girls. It's hunting season, so most likely will do Sunday afternoons unless we're hunting at home (strong possibility). Class is free, and hands on working is optional but encouraged.

I did this in the spring and had good feedback, so may as well do it again.
