Agreed, but I know that I wanted chickens for pets and eggs, and that before I ever brought chickens on my property I was in this forum and all over the rest of the internet, researching the best way to cull. I wanted to be prepared, both for unwanted roosters and in case (knock wood) I ever did have a predator problem and wind up with a severely injured chicken for whom I needed to end their suffering.
And, now my chicken ... erm, let's not say obsession. Let's say "fascination", shall we? My chicken "fascination" has grown so that I have an incubator, where I thought I'd never ever do that, I have 23 silkie eggs in that incubator and am working on them a tractor from an upcycled 7x14x6 dog run, and ... and ... I am making decisions on what kind I want my 26 meat birds to be after I build them a tractor.
I don't think we need to alienate people who "just" want pets, because that can change over time, and even people who "just" want pets can come looking for help and advice for the eventuality when they have to help one of their babies by letting it go. And I don't mind helping people learn, whether it's just so they can help one who is injured, or so they can process their extra roos - or so they can keep healthy, humanely-raised-and-slaughtered chicken on their table year-round.
