I put in the safety hole (usually by 24 hours after they have internally pipped), wait about 12 hours from there, and then open the air cell. You do not want to try to be zipping them at that time. Read the article in my signature for instructions on what you should be doing. The one called Assisted Hatching Guide for all Poultry.

Thank you so much.
I've seen so many guides about assisting, but yours actually explains it in a way I get it.
I feel more confident now that if I do need to help, I'll be able to.

Thanks for chiming in Pyxis, you have a lot more experience than me!!!
Ok, small issue.
I woke up this morning, expecting to be needing to make a safety hole.
Two of them have externally pipped.
I can't open the incubator.

What's a girl to do if the others need a safety hole or if the pipped ones need help?

YABADABADOOOOOOOOOOOOO!! I want to see a picture!!!
I GOT YOU

Congrats!

And, you can open the incubator after they have externally pipped, just in case you need to know that for the future :)

Thank you!
The remaining babies all have safety holes and if they aren't hatched by morning, I'm going to follow your guide to a T! I can't just let my hatched baby be by herself.
But I have a good feeling that two eggs will hatch by the morning, they are talking to duckling that is out.
