Is there a way to turn off the stuff on the right hand side?

well, I'm not sure what I did but I don't have any ads, only the side bar. There is a way you don't have to see it, and easy fix. Just drag the right side of your browser to cover the whatever they call it. Make sure you have your posts set at constant width. Of course, it does make your browser a bit skinny. I decided after while they weren't too distracting, and leaving it alone means I don't have to keep changing my browser width.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. We're trying to make sure we find the balance between features, usability, and making sure the site is sustainable (If everyone turned off ads, BYC goes bye-bye).

So, if you're going to turn off ads, please at least become a GFM... which you can do by buying or by winning a contest / earning it. As soon as the dust settles from this big move, we'll be cranking out a ton of new contests!!

Regarding the side bar: We're reviewing the suggestions and ideas. Right now the side bar doesn't have a ton of stuff, but once we get "tagging" sorted out, that side bar becomes WAY more helpful, for example:

Say your browsing a thread about raccoons. If someone tags that thread as racoons, all other content cross the site that is tagged the same becomes discoverable and much is presented in the side bar as related topics, pages, etc.

We're going to be working on some really great updates to the tagging and sidebar that will make it much more useful than it is right now.

With that said, we are reviewing the feedback and discussing the options.

Thanks!

Useful or not, I personally can't handle the sidebars. I would prefer to do a tag search or do a regular search or even a google site search than have to look at sidebars all the time. Unfortunately the only way to turn off sidebars is to use adblock which turns off ads.

chris, do you know how I would get this done with IE7 ??? thanks

I believe you can use AdBlock.

Chris

IE has simple adblock but if you want to block more than 200 ads per day, you have to pay. I was up late last night but got my 200 in by noon when I first got online today. So it doesn't take long to reach the max.

I don't mind the presence of the sidebar that much, but what's on it is not very useful. The 'reviews' section is not something I'd like to see every day. Maybe the tags section will be nice once it's working. I'd even prefer ads over 'reviews'. :) :)

BYC is actually the only site I have my adblock deactivated on however if the adblock could block the side bar items in FireFox I'd be using it. I don't want to have to switch to another browser to get rid of them but I'm considering it. I don't mind the ads, most aren't useful to me as I'm in another country but they are 'chicken-ee' and help the site and don't bother me but the reviews and such annoy me a lot. I have a GFM to support the site as well and I considered a PPM but don't have the funds currently. I don't think I should have to have a PPM just to get rid of the sidebar.

I know your busy and things are just settling down here but it seems like an awful lot of people would like to be able to turn off things in the sidebar.

I don't think I have seen even one person say "Hey, I love those reviews, keep them there!". So if you must have a sidebar, maybe just change what's in it.

For right now, I've switched to Chrome - with adblock I can turn off everything I want - and I'm only doing it because of the reviews.

Now that I like. For all of the folks that get aggravated at people for asking the same questions over and over and complain that they should just search for the answers themselves(and I know you're out there), this feature should make you very happy!
Think I'm going to like the sidebar once the tags are working.
