Is there a way to turn off the stuff on the right hand side?

Hmm.. In FF I use adblocker +, and it removes all the ads, but it doesn't recognize the sidebar as a blockable element.

If you are using AdBlock you have to manually select the right bar buy putting the cursor over the Right Bar then Right click, select AdBlock and follow the instructions.

Chris, using FireFox. My AdBlock is still screwed up from when the malware issues happened on BYC. Gonna have to uninstall then reinstall I guess.

I blocked the Recent Reviews that is on the right hand side, the Recent Discussion /Recent Reviews /Recent Articles Bar at the bottom of the page and the BYC chicken at the top left hand side of the page.

I switched to Chrome about a year ago and it seem to be working ok, I am going to have to update my malware.

Ah that may be why if you are using Chrome. It's possible the adblock in chrome or IE will work, but in firefox it won't. I'll try Chrome, but ever since they got rid of the left side bookmark bar I went back to FF.

ETA: Tried Chrome, and the adblock for Chrome IS able to block the recent reviews.. Now if only they had a decent bookmark bar.

I used an adblock like the other poster. But IE's simple adblock only blocks 200 ads per day and apparently I've reached my limit so I have to either pay them or deal with the stupid sidebars until midnight (or use Chrome until midnight). Dang, everyone wants my nonexistent money.

In firefox when I right click I don't get the straightfoward adblock options like in Chrome and IE. But the whole site doesn't work well for me in my old version of FF so I'm not going to put forth the effort to do it.

I don't mind the ads. I actually liked the ads that were showing here-they were pretty to look at and actually useful. But if I block the other junk the ads get blocked too.

I just noticed something............the farther you scroll down a thread, the ads and stuff disapear and the thread boxes get wider and take up the screen kinda like it used to be but not the way it used to be, I guess I can deal with it

Just use AdBlock. Then, right click on the "right hand side" stuff and use manual block, slide the adjustment tool until right hand side is always blocked.
