IT HAPPENED!!!

Today, at 29 weeks and 5 days old... our girl Summer laid her first egg! She is a Welbar (Welsummer x Barred Rock).

She is by far the most friendly girl in the flock... and is always looking for treats. She enjoys being held, pet and cuddled. Falling asleep in your lap is her #1 goal in life.

She has been in the coop a lot lately, and checking out the nestbox area for the last day or two. She laid her first egg in a nest box like a perfect lady! (I actually thought she didn't lay because Speedy was screaming at her to get out of the nest box...)

$50 to ship chicks???! That's absurd. I wonder if it was just because of all of the craziness with shipping issues last year... maybe higher than normal pricing? When I ordered in chicks, it was $9 for the box that would hold up to 10 day old babies. Will your local feed store put in an order for you to come with their normal shipment? Our store here will do that if there's specific ones you are looking for... then you don't have to pay any shipping LOL you just pick them up there and pay them for the chicks!

I just went to Meyer and put in 3 chicks and yup $50 shipping so over $70 for 3 chicks. Think if I order 12 or more it is a bit cheaper. Hmmm I will have to ask if they do that. Maybe I can check next time I go in and get food

I may be a tiny bit jealous! Lol. How many do you have laying now? I just have freeloaders that are 32 weeks 5 days. Lol

Summer makes #12 to start laying. Moon returned home from MoltVegas today! Still waiting for Sunny and Nugget to resume. Bean took today off. This was today's egg collection!

Have you done separation check on any of your other girls recently? Maybe they will ninja-surprise you! Especially now since Annabelle is showing off her fancy pink eggs I'm convinced that start of lay is contagious. The 4 girls(22weeks old) that I thought would start before Bean and Summer did crazy nest box business all day.

Sunny and Nugget I think will start back sometime in the next couple of weeks. I can tell Nugget is still molting but it seems like they are both about done and being more social again.

I haven't. There is zero chance of catching Rosie unless at dusk. Lol. I checked Marshmallow forever ago and she was more separated then than Annabelle. Lol. I figure when they start going in the nest box I will know it is close. Lol.

You're right - once they start playing around near/in nest boxes we can start a timer haha. Unless they randomly lay an egg in a weird location like some bad girls here are known to do!

I've got my hands full this morning. Had to bring my 16 week old ISA brown inside because she won't stand or walk. She was a little off yesterday. I just made a post in the emergency section for her and hope someone has seen this before. Its really weird because other than not using her legs she's acting totally fine.....
