I never used to declaw cats, until I had one that disemboweled anything upholstered, including the box springs! It was hard to believe that a little house cat could cause that much damage!
My parents started declawing after they had a cat that ripped up the solid wood furniture, and the walls.
None of the cats appeared to suffer, or had a personality change, or anything. My parents' cats are indoor-outdoor, and they cope fine. (They're just declawed in front.)
