Ivomec Pour on for cattle for dogs?? Is this true....

I bought a bottle of cow/horse wormer (Ivomec) and used it in what I thought was a small quantity on a chicken that had developed bad leg mites. Turns out I am not good at calculating dosages and was giving her about 100 times to much. She survived and was fine and it got rid of the mites. I recommend at least getting someone who knows what they are doing to show you before you use this stuff.

Well why dont you share with us what dosage your vet said? And isnt Ivomec and Ivermectin the same thing? This is a confusing post. Are you really dosing yourself for it? I didnt think it was safe for humans.

Ivomec is a brand name type of Ivermectin

The pour on and the injectable are different preparations, though.

I use the injectible 1% Ivomec every month:
-- .1cc per 11lbs of body weight.
Give orally.

Since I know my dogs are MDR1 normal/normal, I don't worry about an overdose.

You can rotate your wormer by using Fenbendazole. The liquid goat wormer is easiest - SafeGuard. Use for 3 - 5 days, follow-up in two weeks.

ETA: All the information you need is in this book. I have it, and yes - that is where the dosage regimen came from: http://www.oldcountryvet.com/

Well, theory is nice and fun and all that, but a number of people (including some I know) have had collie-type dogs DIE from ivermectin sensitivity.

What mostly matters is what actually happens (and what happens among large numbers of animals, not just "I did this once and nothing awful happened"), not what a person might *think* should happen.

In my opinion.

Regarding the original question on the thread, it depends how much you're willing to stake on your ability to perform careful accurate dilutions/measurements, and how you'd feel if something went wrong. Personally I'm with Doc Henry on it's not worth the small amount of money to be saved, but it's an individual choice.

Yes theory is fun, and what mostly matters is what actually Happened, I think I will believe the bible over people that think it was wormer that killed their herd dog, But if you have some conclusive proof that the make up of one k9 verses another is totally different I would really like to read it, Not somthing put out by other med. salesmen or someones friend, But scientific evidents that states a herd dog does not have the same genetic make of as all the other dogs on this earth

Huh?? Dog breeds differ considerably. A chihuaua is not a labrador retriever is not a greyhound. Just as there are differences among in *shape* among dogs, and in what diseases they are susceptable (as surely you've noticed?), there are also differences among dogs -- among dog BREEDS -- in the details of their physiology.

You want people with academic degrees telling you, fine, Google is your friend, the first few returns I got were things like:

http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_ivermectin.html (vets' page for dog owners)

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1636591/ (article from the Canadian Veterinary Journal)

http://www.vetmed.wsu.edu/announcements/ivermectin/index.asp (vet school webpage with links to further information and ways to have your dog tested)

Good grief, the Bible did not mention iPods either yet I do not disbelieve in their existance

The reason I do not share the dosage is the same reason I would not give someone prescription medicine that was prescribed to me. I can't control how someone would use the information and I will not have that hanging on my mind. I was suggesting that if my vet was good enough to do this for me, then everyone should ask their vets and see if they will give them the same information.

So, where does the bible OK giving ivermectin to collie breeds?!? Is my copy missing The Book of Rover or something?

Follow this link . Whole big bunch of scholarly articles out there about the specific genetic mutation that causes a sensitivity to ivermectin in certain dogs.
