January 2020 Hatch along

You guys are making me jealous! I wanna hatch ducks again!!!!

I had to go on an emergency trip last year and so my ducklings turned craaaaaaaazy so I gave them to a friend with a lake and a couple flocks of ducks.

I always keep up with the hatch a longs (jealously). I always wonder what kind of weather everyone has that allows them to do year round hatches. I mean Ausstralia is burning yet its felt like GB is sinking, ive never known it so wet, not particularly cold but just rain after rain.
I cant wait till March till i can actually join in!

I have a building that is really a small
Horse barn that I keep all my chickens in. It’s got a large overhang on the roof and a concrete area that I keep all the chicks and grow outs. The only really hard time to be raising older chicks out there for me is super duper extreme heat because it gets afternoon sun and I’m in Texas where it gets fairly hot in August.

Emu egg A sounded. Yesterday, I think. We heard it whistle. No progress overnight. No whistling this morning, but it is still moving. Nothing from Egg B still. In theory, if A hatches, it should be today or possibly tomorrow.

Hatching year round for us means... chicks in the house. Well, in the basement, this year. Our barn/garage isn’t heated, so I only brood them out there in the summer.

I'm in VA and I keep them in the large shed inside a brooder with a heat lamp. My chicks usually feather out quite fast so they're outside around 5ish weeks

Knee deep in muck in the chicken yard here in Ireland too!! Need to get the run covered and drainage system in pace before I can even think about hatching . Need to get it done ASAP because my rescue ex-battery hens only have another year of active laying at the very longest and I need to have the babies grown and ready to go on line by then. Meanwhile lurking on the hatch alongs to learn and live vicariously.

Sadly, egg A quit this afternoon. He was active this morning, maybe a little panicky. I gave him a safety hole yesterday to buy it time. I wish I’d helped this morning, and not listened to advice from the emu groups. I knew he had a chance of not being able to do it on his own due to the low end of weight loss. Hindsight and all that.

Eggtopsy showed he was ready to come out. No veins, no yolk sac remaining. Membranes looked good. He was big, tummy a bit bloated. He needed to hatch. He was beautiful.

Egg B had never developed.

Incubator is turned off for a while.
