january hatch-a-long

Pics
we’re supposed to actually get a sunny day today so I’m hoping to get my coops and run cleaned up and :fl a fresh bale of straw down. my poor chickens are practically needing waders at this point with all the rain! also have to clean up the processing mess, and reorganize brooding area for next weeks hatch!!

Looks like I’m scheduled for a possible January 25th hatch if the eggs are fertile.
I had my 2 Serama hens co-hatch a chick on Dec 10th. Although they were both broody and both sat on it, one has since taken over more of the mom duties. The other no longer gives the chick her treats and has been seen mating with their Roo. She has started to lay again and I got 3 eggs since last weekend. I labeled them since they may be fertile. The dates laid were 12/31, 1/1, and either 1/3 or 1/4
Lou and behold, we get back from a few days away and I find my silkie broody. So I gave her the eggs. It was very late last night so if I get another egg today I will add it and then that is it.
How soon will I be able to tell if they are fertile?
Update: found one more egg today (1/5) so that will be the last one for this hatch. I’ll candle next weekend to see if they are fertile.

I think its 7 to 8 days and then you can candle it to see if you see any veins in the egg.
I also seen someone once say after 3 days and you open the egg after mating they should be fertile is he is doing his job correctly.

Eggs arrived! I now get to panic because they're three days early. Not that it's a bad thing!

It's a mystery! I bought some off Ebay for my kids on the suggestion of a few local people. This is the ad I bought from. In the buying message I said that Phoenix, Lavender, Silver laced, Silkie, cochin, Ayem Cemani and Polish were the kids' favorite picks. She said she had 'most of' them on hand and would 'try to include some' for the kids. But who knows! I just want a peeper.

Despite living in Utah where it's VERY dry I'm now struggling with keeping the humidity right. Pesky thing won't go below 70 in the 'bater. Even though I only have like maybe a tablespoon of water in there. I love having the eggs earlier than later, but it threw off my planning a bit. :p I had to get new tools due to my cat's bowls exploding on them.

I get a crash course in setting things up, yay! At least my temp seems to be right.

lockdown update....we removed the 5 “clear” (1 had cracked and lost pieces of shell??) we could see movement in 5. 1 possible blood ring (but i left it in just in case I was wrong) the other 19 had normal air cell but were too full and dark to discern clear movement. :fl:fl:pop:pop
